According to former principal and now Piedmont Unified School District Assistant Superintendent Randy Booker, Piedmont High School is a place where, "academics are cool," so you can blame the students' high scores on standardized tests and the school's top rankings on state indexes on peer pressure.

PHS consistently sees more than 85 percent of its students achieving the proficient or advanced levels on California STAR tests; the school ranks in the top 10 percent of California schools on the Academic Performance Index (API). PHS seniors routinely score a hundred points better on average than their peers across the state on the verbal, math, and writing sections of the SAT.

But beyond test taking, PHS aims to foster well-rounded and well-adjusted students with a comprehensive curriculum and a supportive environment.

Freshmen are eased into high school with a curriculum that is purposely less rigorous than at comparable schools. The workload ramps up in sophomore year; junior year, ahead of college admissions, "it's lights out," says Booker. But on the flip side, the Wellness Center not only offers counseling services to help students deal with the stress, but learning about the warning signs and coping skills is required as part of the social psychology course all sophomores take.

And to give the kids some balance, all freshman boys are enrolled in a cappella and there are 15 sections of performing and fine arts, practically unheard of for a school of less than 800 students. Hands on courses in subjects from sports medicine to web design are included in the senior year offerings. More than 80 percent of students participate in sports from basketball to surfing.?

FCC's Outage Reporting Rules Take Effect for Interconnected VoIP ...

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and other recent natural disasters, there is increasing focus on how communications networks weather these storms. In addition to significant, sometimes catastrophic, harm to life and property, severe weather events also sometimes create significant network disruptions or outages, leaving business and residential customers without critical voice and data services.?These events make?the Federal Communications Commission?s recent?expansion of its outage reporting requirements?particularly timely.

Under rules?that?are effective as of?yesterday, the?FCC has expanded its communications network outage reporting requirements to include providers of interconnected Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. As a result, when a VoIP provider suffers an ?outage,? defined by the FCC as ?a network failure or degradation that significantly degrades the end user?s ability to make or maintain communications,? the VoIP provider must report the outage to the FCC if the outage meets?specific criteria. The FCC states that in the case of interconnected VoIP, it interprets "outage" to mean a complete loss of service and/or connectivity to customers, and?the provider is deemed to have suffered a reportable?outage:?

• "If the outage even potentially affects a 911 special facility and lasts at least 30 minutes, then within 4 hours of having knowledge of the outage, the provider has to notify the FCC of the outage, through NORS [the Network Outage Reporting System].?The interconnected VoIP service provider also has to contact, as soon as possible, the appropriate personnel at the affected or potentially affected 911 special facility with information that could help mitigate any effects of the outage.
• If the interconnected VoIP service provider experiences an outage on any of its own facilities or those it operates, leases or otherwise uses (not including 911 special facilities) and the outage lasts at least 30 minutes and has the potential to affect at least 900,000 user minutes, then within 24 hours of having knowledge of the outage, the provider has to notify the FCC of the outage, through NORS.
• If the outage even potentially affects any ?special offices and facilities? and the outage lasts at least 30 minutes, then within 24 hours of having knowledge of the outage, the interconnected VoIP service provider has to notify the FCC of the outage, through NORS."

The expanded rules now apply to facilities-based and non-facilities-based interconnected VoIP providers.?The rules define a VoIP service as ?interconnected? if it (1) enables realtime, two-way voice communications; (2) requires a broadband connection from the user?s location; (3) requires Internet protocol-compatible customer premises equipment (CPE); and (4) permits users generally to receive calls that originate on the public switched telephone network. "Special offices and facilities"?include certain military, government, power plant and airport facilities. The rules apply even if the VoIP service is not ?facilities based,? meaning that the VoIP provider neither owns nor has a possessory interest in the ?channels of communication? used to provide the service. As a result, these?FCC rules explicitly extend to so-called ?over-the-top? VoIP providers.

On Friday, the FCC published a small entity compliance guide that discusses these new requirements.?As network outage issues gain attention and VoIP services expand, interconnected VoIP providers should become familiar with these requirements. This guide provides a useful starting point in anticipation of the next severe weather event or possible service disruption.?

San Francisco Nudity Lawsuit: Judge Ordered To Dismiss Suit Over Ban

SAN FRANCISCO ? San Francisco's city attorney is urging a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit seeking to overturn the city's recently approved nudity ban.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports ( ) Dennis Herrera responded Thursday to the complaint filed by nudity activists who say the ordinance violates their constitutional rights. http://bit.ly/U1yQHg

The ban was approved by the Board of Supervisors this month and is scheduled to take effect Feb. 1. It bars nudity in public places, with exceptions at events like the Bay to Breakers race and the Folsom Street Fair.

Herrera says many municipalities have bans on public nudity and their constitutionality has been repeatedly affirmed by federal courts.

An attorney for the plaintiffs says there are many laws in other parts of the country that wouldn't be tolerated in San Francisco.

?Best Funeral Ever? TV show in the works

A casket is carried into a boxing ring on the pilot episode of "Best Funeral Ever" (EW)"Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" may be about to lose its crown as most-ridiculed show on television. That's because The Learning Channel (TLC), the same network behind Honey Boo Boo and other cultural landmarks such as "Cake Boss" and "Extreme Couponing," is launching a new show based on a funeral home.

EW reports that "Best Funeral Ever" will air on Dec. 26?as a one-time special. It will go behind the scenes of the Golden Gate Funeral Home in Dallas,?a truly, well, unique funeral home. If the show gets strong-enough ratings, it's expected to be picked up as a full-time series.

Golden Gate's funeral director, John Beckwith, helps each family plan an unconventional service followed by what he calls a "wild party."?Some funerals have included a barbecue-themed memorial?featuring a sauce fountain?and one was held inside a boxing ring.

In the past, Yahoo News has reported on extravagant funeral options, including a $35,000?gold-plated coffin. But this is the first we've heard of a funeral home creating scenarios in which the deceased can (kind of) slam dunk a basketball, which Beckwith says is another one of its potential services.

"We do not have generic funerals," Beckwith tells a family attending a memorial planning session. "Everybody's experience has to be different."

In a clip for the show, Beckwith says Golden Gate's services are based on the tradition of homegoing funerals, which have their roots in the African-American community and are constructed as a more vibrant and positive occasion than some traditional funerals.

(When the singer Whitney Houston passed away, her family sent out invitations that said the services would be done in the style of a homegoing.)

"We're going to make these families extremely happy at the worst moments of their lives," Beckwith told EW.
