Facebook Stalking an Ex Won't Help You Move On

Here's something you might already know: Checking and refreshing your ex's Facebook page won't help you move on.

New research out this month finds that using Facebook to keep tabs on a former flame can delay emotional recovery and personal growth after a breakup. But defriending might not be the best solution.

In the study, psychologist Tara C. Marshall of Brunel University in England asked 464 participants (mostly college-age women) to evaluate their Facebook usage and emotional recovery following a breakup with a romantic partner.

The participants answered questions like, "How often do you look at your ex-partner's Facebook page?" and "How often do you look at your ex-partner's list of Facebook friends?" They also were asked to rate their current distress over the breakup as well as their lingering sexual desires and negative feelings toward the ex-partner, including anger, disappointment, confusion and hate. Furthermore, the study participants assessed how much their lives had changed as a result of their breakup, such as whether they'd developed new interests.

In analyzing the responses, Marshall found that those who Facebook-stalked their ex more frequently were more likely to be hung up on the breakup, with greater distress, negative feelings, longing for the ex-partner and lower personal growth. [6 Signs You're Addicted to Facebook]

"In spite of the need for further research, the take-home message from the present study is that keeping tabs on an ex-partner through Facebook is associated with poorer emotional recovery and personal growth following a breakup," Marshall wrote Sept. 4 in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking. "Therefore, avoiding exposure to an ex-partner, both offline and online, may be the best remedy for healing a broken heart."

But defriending might not be the answer to avoid these emotional pitfalls. The same associations held true ? and were even intensified in some areas ? when the individual was not a Facebook friend of the ex-partner. The study suggests that in some cases "unbidden exposure" to an ex's mundane status updates might snuff out any residual desire for that person.

"Former partners with whom we are no longer in contact, by contrast, may remain shrouded in an alluring mystique, suggesting that remaining Facebook friends with an ex-partner may actually help rather than harm one's post-breakup recovery," wrote the psychologist.

However, those who remained Facebook friends with their ex-partner had lower rates of personal growth, the study found. This suggests maintaining even a weak connection over the Internet post-breakup might disrupt moving on, Marshall said, noting this also indicates emotional recovery and growth might be separate processes.

Red Sox Hand Struggling Rays 4th Straight Loss: Tampa Bay Falls Six Games Back In AL East

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Felix Doubront limited Tampa Bay's sputtering offense to one hit over six innings and the Boston Red Sox rallied for a 7-5 victory that dealt another blow to the Rays' fading playoff hopes on Tuesday.

Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia, James Loney, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ryan Lavarnway drove in runs for the Red Sox, who beat their AL East rivals for the second straight night, extending Tampa Bay's losing streak to four games and dropping the third-place Rays six games behind the division-leading New York Yankees.

Doubront (11-9) settled down after a shaky third inning when he loaded the bases on three walks before yielding a two-run single to Ben Zobrist and Evan Longoria's sacrifice fly. The left-hander walked five and struck out five, ending a stretch in which he went 0-5 over eight starts dating to late July.

The Red Sox, who have already been eliminated from playoff contention, scored a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. They took the lead with an unearned run off Kyle Farnsworth (1-6) in the sixth, then tacked on three more in the seventh when Saltalamacchia had an RBI single and Lavarnway followed with a two-run double off Wade Davis.

The Rays lost for the seventh time in eight games despite four RBIs from Zobrist, who added a two-run single off Junichi Tazawa in the seventh to help Tampa Bay pull within 7-5. The runs were charged to Clayton Mortensen, who loaded the bases with two outs when he hit Carlos Pena with a pitch and walked the next two batters.

Andrew Bailey pitched the ninth for his fifth save, completing a three-hitter.

Doubront earned his first victory since July 18, when he beat the Chicago White Sox.

The left-hander walked Sean Rodriguez, Desmond Jennings and B.J. Upton to load the bases with one out in the third, then watched all of them score on Zobrist's first hit and Longoria's fly ball to left. He eventually got into a groove and retired 11 of his last 12 batters, limiting the Rays to a one-out walk in the fifth.

Tampa Bay starter Jeremy Hellickson allowed three runs and five hits in four-plus innings.

Loney singled in a run in the fourth, and the Red Sox chased Hellickson in the fifth when Jose Iglesias walked and Pedro Ciriaco and Ellsbury singled to begin the inning. Ellsbury's hit trimmed Tampa Bay's lead to 3-2 and Boston pulled even on Pedroia's sacrifice fly off Jake McGee.

Boston broke the tie on a throwing error by Rodriguez, filling in at third base for Longoria, who served as the designated hitter.

The Rays committed three errors for the second straight night. A year after finishing with a major league-low 73 errors, they have 109 with 14 games remaining.

NOTES: Longoria, who missed 85 games earlier this season due to a partially torn left hamstring, returned after sitting out Monday to rest his legs. Manager Joe Maddon said he may play in the field for the remainder of the four-game series. ... Boston bench coach Tim Bogar is scheduled to interview Wednesday for the open Houston managerial position. "I hope it works well for him," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. ... Red Sox RHP John Lackey (right elbow surgery) threw batting practice and is scheduled to pitch Sunday in an instructional league intrasquad game in Fort Myers.

Iran's oil minister says crude exports rebounding

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's oil minister said Wednesday that crude exports are rebounding after being hit by a European embargo in July, describing for parliament the strategies by which the Islamic Republic says it is countering punitive measures imposed by the West over Tehran's nuclear program.

Rostam Qassemi did not provide figures. But some analysts say that exports had fallen in July by as much as 40 percent, hitting a sector that counts for four-fifths of the country's foreign revenue. His comments carried by the semiofficial Mehr news agency appear part of wider efforts by Iranian officials to show that Iran can ride out the sanctions.

"We have no problem selling our oil," Qassemi said. "Iran's crude oil exports are increasing. With the increase in exports, the way has been paved for more currency income."

The minister told legislators that Iran has found ways to provide insurance to tankers carrying Iranian crude to Asian customers, bypassing one of the legal obstacles aimed at discouraging companies from buying and trading in Iranian oil.

"Foreign contractors imposed insurance sanctions on oil tankers. Now we have bypassed those sanctions. Currently there is no problem to provide insurance to tankers carrying Iran's crude oil," the semi-official Mehr news agency quoted Qassemi as saying.

He did not provide details, but Iran had earlier said it was setting up private insurance companies ? a possible way by which the country is using its ample oil earnings to offer incentives to offset sanctions.

The U.S. and Europe have imposed a range of sanctions on Iran over nuclear activities that the West claims are aimed at developing a weapon. Iran says its program is for peaceful purposes.

The International Energy Agency says Iran's oil exports plunged to 1 million barrels a day in July from 1.74 million barrels a day in June after an embargo by the European Union, which accounted for around 18 percent of Iran's exports.

Crude oil exports account for about 80 percent of Iran's foreign revenue.

The 27-nation European Union stopped all contracts with Tehran on July 1. Meanwhile, the U.S. has been pressuring Iran's key Asian oil customers such as China, India, South Korea and Japan to look to other suppliers.

China, India, Japan and South Korea are among Iran's most important oil export markets. The U.S. has exempted its allies South Korea and Japan from U.S. sanctions after they significantly reduced their imports of Iranian oil.

India and Japan are already offering government-backed insurance for ships carrying Iranian crude in order to bypass European sanctions.

Fast-growing China ? which counts on Iran for about 10 percent of its energy needs ? has resisted American pressures and continues to buy more than 510,000 barrels of Iranian crude a day.

But Iran is struggling with its national currency, the rial, that has lost more than half of its value just in a year. Economy Minister Shamseddin Hosseini was grilled over rial's devaluation at the parliament's closed door meeting Wednesday.

Iran's national currency hit new record low against dollar earlier this month, trading at nearly 26,000 to the U.S. dollar last week on the black market, compared to 21,000 rials earlier this month. The rial was trading at around 10,500 rials to the U.S. dollar in late December 2010.

"The important development that has taken place is that within a few years, the value of the national currency has been cut by half against foreign currencies," the parliament's website, icana.ir, quoted lawmaker Elyas Naderan as saying in Wednesday's session. "Government's mismanagement and obstinacy is responsible for this chaotic situation in the currency market."

While sanctions are partly blamed for rial devaluation, experts have accused the government of deliberately doing so in order to sell its currency at higher prices and meet its budget deficit.

1959 First EVER Barbie Commercial High Quaility HQ!

1959 First EVER Barbie Commercial High Quaility HQ!

This is the first Barbie commercial that first aired during Mickey Mouse Club! This is higher quaility then our old upload we did last year, enjoy. :) Ruth Handler watched her daughter Barbara at play with paper dolls, and noticed that she often enjoyed giving them adult roles. At the time, most children's toy dolls were representations of infants. Realizing that there could be a gap in the market, Handler suggested the idea of an adult-bodied doll to her husband Elliot, a co-founder of the Mattel toy company. He was unenthusiastic about the idea, as were Mattel's directors. During a trip to Europe in 1956 with her children Barbara and Kenneth, Ruth Handler came across a German toy doll called Bild Lilli. The adult-figured Lilli doll was like what Handler had in mind, so she purchased three of them. She gave one to her daughter and took the others back to Mattel. The Lilli doll was based on a popular character appearing in a comic strip drawn by Reinhard Beuthin for the newspaper Die Bild-Zeitung. Upon her return to the United States, Handler reworked the design of the doll (with help from engineer Jack Ryan) and the doll was given a name, Barbie, after Handler's daughter Barbara. The doll made its debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York on March 9, 1959. This date is also used as Barbie's official birthday. Mattel acquired the rights to the Bild Lilli doll in 1964 and production of Lilli was stopped. The first Barbie doll wore a black and white zebra striped swimsuit and signature topknot ponytail, and was available as either a blonde or brunette. The doll was marketed as a "Teen-age Fashion Model," with her clothes created by Mattel fashion designer Charlotte Johnson. The first Barbie dolls were manufactured in Japan, with their clothes hand-stitched by Japanese homeworkers. Around 350,000 Barbie dolls were sold during the first year of production. Barbie was one of the first toys to have a marketing strategy based extensively on television advertising, which has been copied widely by other toys. It is estimated that over a billion Barbie dolls have been sold worldwide in over 150 countries, with the well-known fact that three Barbie dolls are sold every second. The standard range of Barbie dolls and related accessories are manufactured to approximately 1/6th scale, which is also known as playscale. Barbie products include not only the range of dolls with their clothes and accessories, but also a huge range of Barbie branded goods such as books, fashion items and video games. Barbie has appeared in a series of animated films and makes a brief guest appearance in the 1999 film Toy Story 2. Uniquely for a toy fashion doll, Barbie has become a cultural icon and has been given honors that are rare in the toy world. In 1974 a section of Times Square in New York City was renamed Barbie Boulevard for a week, while in 1985 the artist Andy Warhol created a painting of Barbie. Barbie's full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts. In a series of novels published by Random House in the 1960s, her parents' names are given as George and Margaret Roberts from the fictional town of Willows, Wisconsin. Barbie has been said to attend Willows High School and Manhattan International High School in New York City, based on the real-life Stuyvesant High School. Today the Barbie line is responsible for more than 80% of Mattel's profits.
