WISE space telescope feels the heat from Orion's sword

Feb. 5, 2013 ? The tangle of clouds and stars that lie in Orion's sword is showcased in a new, expansive view from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE.

Orion, the famous hunter, is visible in evening skies throughout the world from about December through April. The constellation appears tranquil and still to the naked eye, but lying in its sword, at what appears to be a slightly fuzzy star, is a turbulent cauldron of stellar birth.

WISE scanned the whole sky in infrared light, capturing this vast view of the dynamic region, called the Orion nebula. The telescope picked up the infrared glow from dust heated by newborn stars. The colors green and red highlight this warmed dust, while the white regions are the hottest. Massive stars burned through the dust, carving out cavities, the largest of which is seen at the center of the picture.

Astronomers think that our sun was probably born in a similar cloud some five billion years ago. Over time, the cloud would have dispersed and the stars would have drifted apart, leaving us more isolated in space. The crowded newborn stars in the Orion nebula are less than 10 million years old -- billions of years from now, they will likely spread out.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., manages, and operated, WISE for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. The spacecraft was put into hibernation mode in 2011, after it scanned the entire sky twice, completing its main objectives. Edward Wright is the principal investigator and is at UCLA. The mission was selected competitively under NASA's Explorers Program managed by the agency's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. The science instrument was built by the Space Dynamics Laboratory in Logan, Utah. The spacecraft was built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. in Boulder, Colo. Science operations and data processing take place at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.

Kids' Recipe: How to Make Frozen Yogurt at Home - Surf Net Parents

Looking for a simple recipe that?s good for your kids? We love home made frozen yogurt. Sneak in some chunks of real fruit and you?ve got a creamy, delicious treat your kids will want to make (and chow down on) again and again. Here?s how we make this frozen treat at our house using a standard ice cream maker.

You will need:

  • ice cream maker, 4 c. capacity
  • 1 piece cheese cloth
  • strainer

Ingredients:

  • 2 c. whole fat vanilla flavor yogurt (Greek yogurt also works, but is a little tangy for my kids? tastes; this is up to you)
  • 1/2 c. granulated (table) sugar
  • 1 c. peeled and diced fruit of your choice
  • 2 tbsp. water
  • salt for ice cream maker, if your model requires this

Instructions:

1. Before beginning the frozen yogurt making process, you will want to strain your yogurt so it thickens. Allow 4-5 hours advance for this process. To strain the yogurt: place the cheesecloth, opened out, inside the strainer in your sink. Scoop yogurt into the cheesecloth. Tie the cheesecloth closed. Check in 4 hours. If the yogurt has not reached a softened cream cheese consistency, leave for one more hour.

2. While yogurt is thickening, make a syrup out of your sugar and fruit. DO NOT strain the fruit; you need liquid for this process. Dice fruit and add to a small sauce pan. Add the sugar and the water. Bring just to a simmer and cook until fruit is very tender and the liquid is slightly syrupy. Remove from heat and cool completely.

3. When yogurt has been fully strained and the fruit chunks in syrup have cooled, pour both into your ice cream maker per the manufacturer?s directions. (Some ice cream makers require freezing of the container ahead of time.)

4. If you?ll be keeping the yogurt frozen in the maker for a while before eating it, take scoops out 2-3 minutes ahead of serving to allow them to thaw slightly. (Frozen full fat yogurt tends to be harder than ice cream, but you should be able to use an ice cream scooper to get the yogurt out.)

Getting Creative With Your Recipes

Mmmm, chocolate...

Mmmm, chocolate?

Kids love variety ? doesn?t everybody? ? so don?t hesitate to try different recipes. Your children will love coming up with their own creations.

A few ideas for your frozen yogurt recipes:

1. If you only have plain, non-flavored yogurt in the house, add 2 tsp. real vanilla extract to the yogurt along with the other ingredients when you pour them all into the ice cream maker. I do know some families that use plain yogurt and add just the sugar, but I find vanilla gives it that little extra ?kick? and rounds out the flavor of the finished product.

2. Experiment with different yogurt flavors. Add fruit as directed so you get a double-dose of fruity flavor?mmmm.

3. Puree the fruit instead of dicing it for more of a smoothie type dessert. Set out 5-7 minutes in advance of serving OR place fully frozen result into a food processor immediately before serving. This will make a wonderful, thick smoothie that can be eaten either with a spoon or a straw.

4. Add candy pieces or crushed nuts to the ingredients when you place them all into the ice cream maker. Coated candies usually freeze better (M&Ms, for example). This makes an absolutely delicious special-day treat. In our household, the birthday boy or girl gets the candy flavor of his or her choice.

5. You can go all-natural/organic with this idea if you?d like to add that little extra bit of healthiness to your creation. Organic yogurt is easy to find and delicious ? we love Trader Joe?s brand. Carob or organic cocoa chips are delicious additions. And always use real, not imitation, vanilla. Yes, you will be able to tell the difference.

6. Add chunky peanut butter in swirls to your finished product. Thaw the finished product slightly first. This doesn?t taste as good when you add it before freezing; you want the effect to be marbleized throughout the frozen yogurt.

7. Chocolate! Replace Step 2 above (the fruit) with this: in a saucepan, stir together 3/4 cups sugar, 2 tsp corn starch, 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips and 1 can of evaporated milk (12 oz). Simmer until chocolate is melted and. Let cool completely. Proceed to Step 3.

8. For grown-ups only. ;) Add a splash of Amaretto, Kahlua, or Bailey?s Irish Cream to your ingredients. Mmmmm.

When to Make Your Frozen Yogurt

We like our frozen yogurt as:

* a Thursday treat (for some reason, we all seem to lose steam mid-week; making frozen yogurt is a great pick-me-up for draggy days)
* a dessert for guests at a birthday or other party
* a healthier alternative for summer picnic desserts
* school functions that involve bringing food
* pot lucks and family get-togethers

Remember that the best ingredient to this recipe is your own creativity. Experiment! Encourage your kids to give you their suggestions. This is a great learning and bonding experience as well as a delicious one for you and your whole family.

Colombia's FARC to free 3 kidnapped members of security forces

BOGOTA (Reuters) - Colombia's FARC rebels on Saturday admitted to holding two police patrolmen and a soldier it seized last week and pledged to free them in an apparent goodwill gesture at the end of a tense week of peace negotiations with the government.

The captured soldier had not previously been announced by the Defense Ministry.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, the biggest armed group in Latin America, said in a statement it would release the three security officials to the International Committee of the Red Cross and a local peace group.

"We communicate to the families that they are in good health and receiving respectful and dignified treatment," said the statement, dated February 1. "It doesn't cease to surprise us that the defense ministry remained silent" about the soldier.

The announcement comes after a difficult week of peace negotiations in Cuba as the two sides traded barbs amid an increase of violence, kidnappings and attacks on economic infrastructure.

For more than a decade, U.S.-backed strikes against the FARC have severely weakened the rebels and limited their ability to attack the country's economic drivers, helping attract billions of dollars in foreign investment.

But the escalation of violence in recent weeks has left scores of insurgents and government troops dead, demonstrating that even while the FARC is weakened, it is by no means dead.

The government has demanded the FARC stop its practice of kidnapping while the guerrillas this week made clear it would continue to capture members of the armed forces which it regards as "prisoners of war."

President Juan Manuel Santos took the biggest gamble of his political career and faced pressure from opposition leaders when he started talks with the FARC. Attempts by previous governments to end the conflict have ended in shambles and helped energize the rebels and intensify fighting.

The FARC, as the drug-funded group is known, vowed last year to abandon kidnapping for ransom, but this week it seized and later freed three oil workers.

Over its history, the FARC has held dozens of police officers, soldiers and politicians hostage, including French-Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, seized in 2002, and three Americans taken a year later.

Betancourt and the U.S.-defense contractors were rescued by the military in 2008, when Santos was defense minister.

URIBE DEFENSE

In a separate statement on Saturday, the FARC - which began in 1964 as a Marxist agrarian group fighting social inequality - accused former President Alvaro Uribe of trying to ruin the peace talks. It also said he had ties to right-wing paramilitary groups and drug traffickers.

Uribe, who battered the group for two straight terms and is credited with bringing it close to defeat, has been a loud critic of the talks, accusing Santos of seeking a name in the history books above all else.

Santos, despite being at the sharp end of Uribe's criticism, called on the FARC to respect his predecessor.

"The national government rejects the communique issued today by the FARC in Havana and demands respect to the dignity of ex-President Alvaro Uribe," the president's office said.

"The negotiation table is aimed at seeking an end to the conflict so such declarations in no way contribute to that end."

UK cost agency rejects drugs from AstraZeneca, Bristol and Roche

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's healthcare cost watchdog NICE said on Friday it was not able to recommend a new diabetes drug from Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca, and has asked for more information from the companies.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has been considering Forxiga, or dapagliflozin, as an add-on therapy for use with other medicines, including insulin.

NICE, which decides if drugs should be paid for on the state health service, also said it had issued draft guidance not recommending Roche's Avastin for ovarian cancer. The agency has already rejected Avastin in other tumour types.

US economy contracts for the first time in 3-1/2 years

9 hrs.

The U.S. economy stopped dead in its tracks in the last three months of the year, according to the latest government data, as the halting recovery was slammed by Superstorm Sandy and fiscal cliff political gridlock.

But economists said the surprise 0.1 percent contraction in the fourth quarter's annual growth rate was likely a brief pause in an otherwise halting, four-year recovery from the 2007 recession.

??This isn't the start of a new recession,? said Paul Ashworth chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics.

The Commerce Department's report on fourth quarter gross domestic product, the first of several that are typically revised as more data becomes available, followed a stronger-than-expected 3.1 bounce in growth during the preceding three months.Forecasters had been expecting a weak performance of about 1.1 percent growth in the final quarter of 2012 after Sandy shuttered millions of businesses and factories in early November.?

Besides the storm, the weakness appeared to be the result of other one-time factors, including the biggest defense spending cuts in 40 years and a slow build in company stockpiles. Those two factors alone slashed 2.6 percentage points from growth.

The big contraction in defense spending, which reversed an upswing in the third quarter, came as Congress remained deadlocked over compromise needed to avert across-the-board spending cuts known as the sequester. The ??fiscal cliff? compromise reached at the end of the year?postponed those cuts until March 1.?

A top Defense Dept. official said last week that the Pentagon already is eliminating all 46,000 of its temporary civilian workers in anticipation of budget cuts. Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said that if Congress fails to head off mandatory budget cuts by March 1, some 800,000 Pentagon civilian employees will face furloughs and reduced paychecks by April, cutting spending by about $5 billion.?

The other big drag on third quarter growth, the draw-down in business inventories, followed a backup in merchandise in late summer after a slowdown in China and Europe left many U.S. manufacturers with unsold goods. As businesses sold off their backlogs by year-end, the sharp drop in inventories lopped off?1.3 percentage points in GDP growth.

Heavy equipment maker Caterpillar, Inc. said this week that it reduced its inventories by $2 billion in the fourth quarter as global sales declined from a year earlier.?

The?draw-down?means manufacturers are well-positioned for a pick-up in demand this year, according to Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moodys Analytics.?

?That augurs very well going into the first quarter,? he said. ?You can feel things started to pick up again."

That pickup has been reflected in fresher data on the economy?s performance in December, including upbeat reports on home and car sales, business investment and manufacturing orders.??Those reports have raised hopes that the ongoing move to balance the federal budget with tax increases and spending cuts won?t dampen the emerging recovery.

Signs?of?strength
Ironically, the gloomy headline on Wednesday?s GDP report masked two additional signs of economic strength.?

Businesses and consumers were big spenders in the fourth quarter - despite worries that the ongoing budget gridlock had prompted both to sit on the sidelines until the standoff was resolved.??Consumer spending ? which accounts for roughly 70 percent of GDP ? was also up sharply, adding 1.5 percent to GDP.?The recovering housing market added 3-tenths of a percent to growth.

Business investment in new equipment and software jumped 12.4 percent from the preceding three months, adding 9-tenths of a?percent to the economy?s overall expansion rate.?

?The collapse in government spending and cautious inventory controls hide the simple fact that households are spending, businesses are investing and the housing market is expanding,? said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors.

The strength in consumer and business spending helps support the idea that the economy?s long-term trend of a fairly tepid 2 percent growth rate remains intact. The initial tally for all of 2012 showed the economy grew by 2.2 percent, a bit better than 2011's growth of 1.8 percent.

?The reality is that the economy is growing between 2 to 2.5 percent,? said Zandi. ?That?s how fast it?s been growing since the recovery started two-and-a-half years ago.?

That growth pace is slower than typical recoveries in the last half century, which is why the unemployment remains stuck at painfully high levels. The economy has created roughly 150,000 jobs a month, on average, for the past two years, barely enough to keep up with population growth. As a result, the unemployment rate has been falling slowly and has remained stuck at 7.8 percent for the past two months.

Economists expect the government?s January jobs report Friday to show the unemployment rate remained at that level again this month.?That tepid pace of growth and hiring is expected to continue into this year, due in part to the year-end budget deal that ended a two-year Social Security ?tax holiday.??

The increase will cost wage earners about two percent of their take-home pay (until they reach this year?s $113,700 income limit.)?That means a household earning the median $50,000 a year will have about $1,000 less to spend. A household with two highly-paid workers will have up to $4,500 less. ?

A key measure of consumer confidence plummeted this month after Americans noticed the reduction in their paychecks, the Conference Board reported Tuesday.

With growth historically weak and unemployment high, the Federal Reserve has promised to keep interest rates near zero, despite the potential long-term risk of inflation. Central bank Chairman Ben Bernanke has answered critics by saying that the Fed is ready to begin raising rates if price increases begin creeping back into the economy.

Though prices are rising in the housing and stock markets, there is little sign of inflation at the consumer or producer price level. Wage growth has also been flat since the recovery began.?

Still, the risk remains that the Fed?s ?exit strategy," whenever it comes, will put another damper on the economy.?

?I?m afraid that house prices could get to depend on the extremely low mortgage rates which will turn around when the Fed stops its (low interest rate) policy,? said Harvard economist Martin Feldstein, who served as chief economic advisor to President Reagan. ?At some point the Fed is going to have to start raising long term interest rates.?
