Ryder Cup golf: Ian Poulter keeps Europeans in the hunt

Medinah, Ill. ? Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley helped stake the Americans to their biggest lead in the Ryder Cup in more than 30 years. Ian Poulter, eyes bulging and fists shaking with every clutch putt, at least gave Europe some big momentum over the final frantic hour Saturday at Medinah.

Right when it looked as if the Americans were a lock to win back the cup, Poulter birdied his last five holes to win a crucial point and keep everyone guessing. Steady chants of "USA! USA!" gave way to snappy serenades of "Ole, Ole" as both sides trudged to the team rooms in darkness to prepare for 12 singles matches on Sunday.

The Americans still had a big lead, 10-6. Europe at least had hope.

"The last two putts were massive," European captain Jose Maria Olazabal said after watching Poulter stay undefeated in this Ryder Cup by rolling in one last birdie putt from 12 feet. "That gives us a chance. It?s been done before in the past. Tomorrow is a big day."

Only one team has ever rallied from four points behind on the final day ? the United States in that famous comeback at Brookline in 1999. Olazabal remembers it well. He was in the decisive match when Justin Leonard rolled in a 45-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole.

Is the Spaniard a big believer in fate?

"I believe momentum will come our way," Olazabal said. "Why not tomorrow?"

The final two matches Saturday were a showcase of what the Ryder Cup is all about ? one brilliant shot after another, birdies on every hole, suspense at every turn.

Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia were on the verge of blowing a 4-up lead to hard-charging Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker, hanging on when Donald matched two birdies with Woods, including a tee shot into the 17th that plopped down 2 feet from the cup.

Their 1-up win kept Woods winless for the first time in a Ryder Cup going into Sunday. Woods and Stricker lost all three of their matches, even though Woods made five birdies on the back nine for the second straight day.

Woods was thinking more of the big picture.

"Being up four is nice," he said. "We are in a great spot right now to win the cup."

Poulter and Rory McIlroy were 2 down with six holes to play against Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson when McIlroy made a 15-foot birdie putt on the 13th, and Poulter took it from there.

"We had to make birdies, and wow! Five in a row. It was awesome," Poulter said. "I?ve got the world No. 1 at my side, backing me up. It allowed me to hit some golf shots."

The crowd was still buzzing as it filed out of Medinah, and Poulter grinned.

"It?s pretty fun, this Ryder Cup," said Poulter, who raised his career record to 11-3-0.

It?s been plenty fun for the Americans, who for the first time have not lost any of the four sessions since the Ryder Cup switched to the current format in 1979. Mickelson and Bradley were flawless in foursomes, matching a Ryder Cup record for largest margin with a 7-and-6 win over Donald and Lee Westwood.

Gay couples may get reprieve in deportation cases

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The Department of Homeland Security is planning to issue a policy memo stating that illegal immigrants with American same-sex partners are eligible to have their deportations put on hold under a federal program designed to focus resources away from low-priority cases.

The move had been sought by gay rights activists and their allies in Congress before Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced plans for the policy Thursday in a letter to 84 Democratic lawmakers.

"It will mark the very first time that lesbian and gay couples have been recognized within immigration policy for relief," said Steve Ralls, the spokesman for Immigration Equality, an advocacy group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender immigrants.

The Democratic lawmakers addressed in Napolitano's letter pressed the agency to inform Immigration and Customs Enforcement field offices that bi-national gay couples in long-term relationships have family ties that should be considered as grounds for deferring a foreign citizen's removal from the U.S.

"I have directed ICE to disseminate written guidance to the field that the interpretation of the phrase 'family relationships' includes long-term, same-sex partners," Napolitano wrote, adding that the decision to grant reprieves still would be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The instructions do not mean that foreigners who are married to Americans of the same sex will be eligible for green cards or citizenship, as are immigrants with opposite sex spouses. The Obama administration is continuing to enforce a 1996 law that prohibits the government from recognizing same-sex marriages, even as it opposes it in court and takes gay relationships into account when evaluating deportation cases.

The Williams Institute, a think tank, estimates that as of 2010 there were about 29,000 same-sex couples nationwide comprised of a U.S citizen and a citizen of another country.

Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington group that advocates tighter immigration policies, said that even though the administration says it is complying with the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act by not allowing citizens to sponsor same-sex spouses for green cards, the pending guidance for ICE officials to review the family ties of same-sex couples suggests otherwise.

"It's a camel's nose under the tent," Krikorian said. "If you get same-sex couples approved in terms of immigration, you can use that as an incremental approach to getting changes in other areas, such as in tax policy."

The policy guidance expected to go out next week will reference a memo ICE Director John Morton issued last year advising the agency's officers and lawyers to review pending deportation cases to determine which ones should be top priority and which ones might be shelved, Napolitano said.

Government attorneys weigh factors such as a person's criminal record, family ties and community relations in making their decisions.

ICE officials said at the time that long-term same-sex relationships could be included under the family ties criteria, but advocates and House Democrats led by Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi wanted that determination put into writing.

Making your Home more Energy Efficient before Winter :: Attic ...

Fall is the perfect time to perform a little preventative maintenance around the house. Homeowners all across the United States will spend the next few months cleaning their gutters, fixing their roofs, cleaning their siding, having their HVAC units serviced, getting their chimneys inspected and much more. But what about attic insulation?

Believe it or not, that puffy attic insulation plays a very important role in the energy efficiency of your home. Your entire home acts as a single heating and cooling system. Each component affects the next, from your HVAC system and ductwork to your home?s envelope (windows, doors, and floors) and even insulation. If one system is not pulling its weight, the whole system suffers.

In fact, ENERGY STAR estimates that properly insulating your attic could save you up to 20% on your heating and cooling costs. So what are you waiting for? Climb that ladder and inspect the current state of your attic insulation. Can you see the floor joists?

  1. No? Then your attic is properly insulated.
  2. Yes? You should add more attic insulation before winter. The recommended insulation level for most attics is R-38, about 12?15 inches of insulation. This should cover your floor joists and make your home more energy efficient.

So get to work making your home more energy efficient and start saving money!

N. Korea 'Hotel of Doom' nearly done 30 years late

The pyramid-shaped 105-story Ryugyong Hotel in Pyongyang, North Korea, appears to be almost complete in this picture on Sept. 23.

By Ian Johnston, NBC News

With more than 3,000 rooms, North Korea's enormous pyramid-shaped Ryugyong Hotel was designed to be a confident declaration of the isolationist communist state's status in the world.

More than three decades after it was supposed to open, the so-called "Hotel of Doom"?in the capital Pyongyang has recently shown signs that it is finally close to being finished, according to reports.

Visitors tour the top floor of the Ryugyong Hotel on Sept. 23. Some three decades after construction began, there is still some work to do.

But photographs released this week reveal that there is still some way to go.

When it's complete, Ryugyong will be one of the tallest hotels in the world, boasting not just one but five revolving restaurants, the?Business Insider website?noted.

PhotoBlog: Communist ideals still strong in China's Nanjie village

Despite not being open, the hotel has already gathered a number of reviews on its Google+ entry.

"This resort is a jewel ... It's unreal how trendy this place is with its neoclassical industrial decor, exotic cuisine, and world class casino that rivals anything in Vegas. The shopping is fabulous, especially if you are in to [sic] antiques. Apparently, antiques are trendy for decades...even the dust is trendy! Definitely one for the bucket list," said one tongue-in-cheek reviewer, who set the tone for the others.

Major genetic discovery explains 10 percent of aortic valve disease

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Researchers at the Sainte-Justine University Hospital Center and University of Montreal have identified genetic origins in 10% of an important form of congenital heart diseases by studying the genetic variability within families. "This is more than the sum of the genes found to date in all previous studies, which explained only 1% of the disease, says Dr. Marc-Phillip Hitz, lead author of the study published in PLoS Genetics, under the direction of Dr. Gregor Andelfinger, pediatric cardiologist and principal investigator leading an international research team, who calls this study "a very important step towards a molecular catalog, which ultimately may explain the evolution of disease in individual patients and allow to influence the progression of the disease."

Congenital heart malformations are at the forefront of all malformations in newborns, and one of the most important causes of infant mortality in Western countries. For their study, the researchers focused on malformations of the aortic valve, where familial clustering of cases often suggests a hereditary component. The researchers therefore decided to adopt a "family approach" and selected families with several members having a heart condition, in order to be able to establish a direct link with the disease. Using very strict filtering criteria to identify possible causal copy number variants -a structural form of variation of the genetic makeup that leads to an increase or decrease in the copy number of small parts of DNA within the genome- the researchers retained only rare variants directly involved in the disease processes and causing severe adverse health effects. The variants had to be carried by the patients but not by healthy members of their family. Researchers then validated the identified genes by confirming that they were highly expressed in the developing mouse heart.

The study also noted that many affected patients carried more than one rare variant. This finding had already been made in the context of other congenital diseases. In addition, the study reveals that in the 59 families analyzed, no copy number variants recurred between two families. "Despite the homogeneity of the French-Canadian population as compared to other populations and similarities seen within families, we realize that copy number variants are very different between families with no genealogical connection. From a genetic point of view, the diseases we looked at are a "family affair."

Moreover, although the study focused on the aortic valve area, genes explaining associated conditions have been identified. "It is striking that the majority of the identified genes also play an important role in blood vessels, not just in the valves of the heart," says Dr. Andelfinger. Indeed, the images are of striking clarity: expression patterns of the genes identified selectively stain areas of the heart where lesions are observed. "Numerous patients continue to have problems after successful initial intervention on the aortic valve, such as aortic dilation. Our study sheds new light on the link between the two issues, something we always observed clinically but had a hard time to explain," he concludes.

It's not too late for troubled fisheries, experts say

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? A study published in Science magazine and co-authored by Bren School Sustainable Fisheries Group (SFG) researchers and their colleagues confirms suspicions that thousands of "data-poor" fisheries, representing some 80 percent of the world's fisheries, are in decline but could recover with proper management.

The authors of "Status and Solutions for the World's Unassessed Fisheries" also found that taking quick action to allow depleted stocks to recover to sustainable levels could result in future catches that are 8 to 40 percent larger than are predicted if current unsustainable fishing practices continue.

The findings were made possible by a new assessment technique developed by the researchers, which allowed them to determine fish population status using far less data than are required by a traditional stock assessment, which is both expensive and time-consuming and impractical for a high percentage of the world's fisheries. Substantial population data are available for only about 20 percent of the world's 10,000 fish stocks, and those well-studied fisheries tend to be in better shape than fisheries for which little data exist.

"For most fisheries, we simply didn't know how many fish were out there and whether their populations were trending up or down," says lead author and Bren School professor of economics Christopher Costello. "Without good information on fish populations, it can be hard to manage sustainably. It's like trying to decide how far you can drive your car without knowing how much gas is in the tank."

Further, Costello explains, lacking sound estimates for a stock's population, "Political pressure tends to dominate decision making, and we end up catching too much. Over time, this can lead a fishery to collapse."

Co-author and Bren School dean, Steve Gaines, describes the data-rich 20 percent of fisheries as "a tiny slice that can give us a skewed view" of the health of global fisheries.

The authors caution that the new assessment method cannot take the place of formal assessment programs for individual fisheries, but they do provide accurate global and regional information that can be used to inform fisheries management decisions. "Using these tools at a regional scale, we can gain up to 80 percent of the insights of traditional assessment approaches at just 1 percent of the cost," says Gaines.

The tool enabled the researchers to provide a new global status report that includes these previously unmeasured fisheries, bringing thousands of what managers call "unassessed" fisheries into focus. The results show that more than half of the world's fisheries are in decline and that, across the globe, stocks for which robust data exist are doing better than those that are less-studied, regardless of which country manages them.

"If we look at assessed stocks, we can be pretty satisfied that fishery management systems are generally working to ensure long-term sustainability," says University of Washington scientist and co-author Ray Hilborn. "For previously unassessed stocks, this doesn't appear to be true."

An interesting finding -- again, made possible by employing this new assessment tool for data-poor fisheries -- is that in large-scale fisheries, stocks that are measured and tracked are at similar levels as those that that have not been formally measured. But under current fishing pressure, their futures look very different: the assessed stocks are starting to show signs of recovery, while fisheries for which little data exists continue to decline. Further, in small-scale fisheries, data-poor stocks are in far worse shape than their well-studied counterparts, and many are plummeting at alarming rates. These small-scale, data-poor fisheries are critical to local food security in many parts of the world.

While the impact on food security is most significant for local-level (small-scale) fisheries in poorer countries, explains co-author, UCSB ecologist, and SFG scientist Sarah Lester, "This isn't just a developing-world problem. Small, unassessed fisheries in the U.S. and Europe are often in as bad a shape as those in the developing world."

While many of the world's fisheries are in trouble, the authors suggest that the majority of them can still rebound with better management.

"Strong management could increase the number of fish in the ocean by more than 50 percent," says Gaines. "When fish populations are healthy they produce more young. It may seem paradoxical, but we can get more fish on our plates by leaving more in the water."

Time is of the essence. "These fisheries can rebound," Costello says, "but the longer we wait, the harder and more costly it will be to bring them back. In another ten years, the window of opportunity may have closed."

The study in Science is part of a larger study titled "Charting a Course to Sustainable Fisheries," released this week by the consulting firm California Environmental Associates. It evaluates successes and gaps in fishery management and conservation programs around the world, highlighting the fact that while methods for returning dwindling fisheries to health are understood, political battles often prevent them from being put into action.

The report shows that where gains are being made, such as in the U.S., where many large fisheries are starting to recover, they result from a combination of efforts: relying on strong science to set total allowable fishing levels, closing some areas to allow for stock rebuilding, and using sustainable seafood markets and rights-based management strategies that give fishermen secure access to a proportion of catch. The report shows that, while there is no one-size-fits-all solution to eliminate overfishing, success can come from employing proven principles and practices while fine-tuning them to suit the specific circumstances and characteristics of individual locations around the world.

"The key is to use and share these practices more broadly," says Matthew Elliott, principal of CEA and author of "Charting a Course to Sustainable Fisheries. "In many areas of the world, particularly in the tropics and sub-tropics, we see fisheries expanding quickly with little in the way of management. This research fills an important information gap for those fisheries. We hope it will draw more international attention to fisheries management in the many parts of the world that we have historically ignored."

"This isn't something where we need another twenty years of science," says Gaines. "We know what it takes."

"Healthy ocean fisheries hold the potential to feed a growing population without destroying the supporting ecosystems to the point where they no longer produce seafood," adds Elliott. "Within our lifetime, we can make sustainable global fisheries the norm rather than the exception."

UPDATE: Amber Alert ends after Garland toddler found with baby ...

Patricia Garcia and Maliyah (via Garland police)

Patricia Garcia and Maliyah (via Garland police)

== 7 a.m., by Matt Peterson ==

Two-year-old Maliyah Vergenz is safe with her family in Garland and her baby sitter is in jail on suspicion of kidnapping.

Authorities found the two at the Villager Inn motel on Highway 80 in Terrell. The little girl was unharmed.

Police say the suspect, Patricia Garcia, has been distraught since losing a baby of her own to miscarriage.

== 3:30 a.m. ==

More importantly, the alert?s been canceled. WFAA is reporting Terrell police found the girl in good condition at a motel. Apparently they tracked a car matching the description in the Amber Alert.

My question is which vehicle description: the ?Chrysler Aspire,? the ?1998 Chrysler Aspen,? or the Chrysler Cirrus?

== 3 a.m. ==

Lots of confusion over the vehicle. Police now say it?s a Chrysler Cirrus. Not an Aspen. Not an Aspire.

== 10:10 p.m. ==

Some more on the vehicle: It?s a beige Chrysler Aspen with severe front-end damage. An initial release misidentified it as an Aspire.

Maliyah was last seen wearing a pink shirt and blue shorts.

WFAA-TV just interviewed police, who told the station that Garcia recently lost her own child. ?Mental strain.?

== 9:50 p.m. ==

Police say Garcia was babysitting Maliyah in the 4900 block of Palo Alto Drive this afternoon when she took off with the child.

Spokesman Joe Harn said he didn?t know of any criminal or violent behavior in Garcia?s past, but ?she has recently been under some mental strain,? which prompted the Amber Alert.

Harn tells me police were in contact with Garcia after the abduction and believed she would bring the child back. Since then, she hasn?t been picking up her phone.

It?s not clear where Garcia lives, and police have no idea which direction she might have gone. They?ve already checked several locations across North Texas to no avail.

== 9:30 p.m.==

Garland police have issued an Amber Alert for an abducted toddler believed to be ?in grave or immediate danger.?

Police say Maliyah Vergenz, 2, was taken by Patricia Garcia (aka Patricia Beruman, Particia Chavez or Patricia Cruces), 38.

Garcia weighs 250 pounds, has brown curly hair, brown eyes and a ?chubby face,? according to the alert. She is believed to be driving a beige 1998 Chrysler Aspire Aspen with paper plates, and was last seen in Garland.

Call the Garland Police Department if you can help find this girl: 214-354-8692 or 972-485-4878

Italy rocked by corruption, drug scandals

By Claudio Lavanga, NBC News

ROME ? Franco Fiorito, a member of the regional council of Lazio, the Italian region that includes Rome, was known ironically among his friends as Batman. It was a nickname he earned when he managed to fall off a Harley Davidson still on a kickstand.

But rather than a superhero, he looks like an actor out of ?The Sopranos? with his slicked-back hairstyle, striped double-breasted suit, bulky figure and bigger than life personality. ??

Fiorito, a member of Silvio Berlusconi?s People of Freedom party (PDL), was accused earlier this month of embezzling at least $1.5 million of public funds to pay for everything from oyster dinners, to hotels, aides and apartments.

Fiorito, who has since resigned, fought the allegations by telling investigators that fellow party members behaved worse than he did ? putting the spotlight on regional president Renata Polverini.

The scandal proved too much for Polverini, who resigned on Monday, and damaged the reputation of Berlusconi?s already weakened party.

She denied allegations of any wrong-doing on her part, but admitted that the scandal had exposed infighting within the PDL party and had stripped the regional council of some legitimacy. ??

But most importantly, it stands as a symbol of a political class that has lost touch with the electorate, and carries on living a lavish lifestyle financed with public funds at a time when most Italians struggle to get by.

?Why did they call him Batman? He sounds more like the joker to me,? said Carla Cecchini, a receptionist from Rome who was waiting at a bus stop in Rome on Wednesday morning. ?He is not even that smart. We know they are all thieves, but this guy didn?t even try to hide it. He is shameless.?

Toga party pix?
Apparently Fiorito is not as brazen as another member of the regional council.

Only days ago, pictures emerged of a lavish toga party organized in 2010 by Carlo de Romanis, a 32-year- old member of Berlusconi?s party. ?

Romanis organized the party to celebrate his election to the regional council and his return to Rome after eight years working at the European Parliament in Brussels.

The theme of the party, ?Ulysses returns home and fights his enemies,? was taken seriously by his 2,000 guests. They showed up dressed up as ancient Roman maidservants, gladiators, patricians in laurel wreaths and minotaurs, drinking from ancient-looking jars. Pictures emerged of guests feeding each other grapes, as well as men wearing pig masks fondling female guests.

?A party worthy of the last days of ancient Rome, when the narcissistic and decadent elite kept enjoying a lavish lifestyle while the empire was falling apart all around them.

The similarities might not be so far-fetched. Even though Carlo ?Ulysses De Romanis? insists the $30,000 he paid for the party came from his own pocket, it still upset many Italians who are tired of seeing the political elite enjoying the lifestyle of emperors while they feel the strain of the recent austerity measures and the economic crisis.

Alex Biasco, a DJ in Milan, told NBC News that the Italian public is partly to blame as well. He said they like to complain about the widespread abuse of office, without acting to bring about any changes.

?Look at the Spanish: they fill the squares in Madrid to demand the resignation of unfit politicians,? said Biasco.? ?While in Italy we have had politicians who stole for decades, who are corrupt to the core?and yet, Italians only fill their squares when their soccer teams win.?

Luca Orsenigo, a 38-year-old Telecom manager from Milan, had a similar complaint.?

?We got to this point because we deserve it. Instead of going to prison, these people are invited to defend themselves on talk-shows," said Orsenigo, referring to the many TV appearances Fiorito enjoyed after the scandal broke. "As long as these people go unpunished, nothing will change?

Cocaine bust
More proof of widespread corruption among Italian governmental institutions came on Tuesday, when the head of the postal service in the Italian Senate was arrested for cocaine trafficking, police said.

Orlando Ranaldi, 53, is accused of being part of a criminal gang 10 Italians and Albanians who ran a cocaine ring in southern Rome. While not a politician, Orlando held a managerial position in Italy?s upper house of parliament. ?

?"I only hope that he didn't push inside the Senate," Senator Felice Belisario of the Italy of Values party told Reuters.

Roberta, a housewife from Rome who gave only her first name, jumped to her own conclusions. ??

?They are all living the high life, and I can?t believe the guy wasn?t doing ?favors? to the political elite,? she said. ?

The recent revelations of champagne-filled toga parties, embezzlement of public funds and cocaine heists have only contributed to widening the gap between the political elite and the electorate.?

?Once again we are showing the world how corrupt we are.? But Italians, thank God, are not all like Batman and Ulysses,? Alessandra Scolaro, a website designer and member of the People of Freedom party from the Veneto region, told NBC News. ?The best Italians are those who wake up every morning and go to work. And those who make us proud by raising the bar of Italian creativity in the arts and fashion industries. This is the real Italy.?

While Italians aren?t likely to descend to the squares to protest and try to get rid of the political class the hard way, they will have the opportunity to bring change in the general elections next spring.?

China joins 9-nation club with first aircraft carrier

AP

China's first aircraft carrier is decorated with colored flags at a shipyard in Dalian in northeast China's Liaoning province Monday.

By Ed Flanagan, NBC News

China brought its first aircraft carrier into service Tuesday, raising the country?s military capability amid heightened tensions with its regional neighbors.

Christened Liaoning -- after the port where the carrier was significantly overhauled after being bought from Ukraine -- this new addition to China?s navy is not large compared to America?s super carriers, but could still potentially have an impact on territorial disputes in the region.

?The aircraft carrier will play an important role in China's settlement of islands disputes and defense of its maritime rights and interests,? said Chinese naval expert, Li Jie, in an interview with Chinese newspaper, People?s Daily.???

The rest of China?s state media also played up the significance of the Liaoning, with the China News Service writing that the Liaoning would have ?far-reaching influence on protecting China?s territory, safety and development and to make the world more peaceful.?

Taiwanese ships clash with Japanese coast guard over disputed islands

The commissioning of the ship is a huge display of national prestige, elevating China to the nine-nation club of carrier-equipped navies.

Presided over by President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao, the unveiling of the Liaoning also comes just before a once-a-decade leadership change in China, during which a new generation of top leaders will be introduced.

China's Ministry of Defense welcomed the new ship, declaring that it would "raise the overall operational strength of the Chinese navy" and help Beijing to "effectively protect national sovereignty, security and development interests."

Japanese coast guard ships shoot water cannon at Taiwanese fishing boats in the East China Sea in a territorial dispute. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

The ship?s full capabilities remain unknown at this point, but the size of the Liaoning and China?s relative lack of technical experience with carrier operations suggests that it will serve more as a training vessel then a deployable ship for combat operations.

The carrier can reportedly hold a compliment of 30 fixed-wing fighters compared to the much larger American Nimitz class carriers than can carry around 90 aircraft.

China?s normally nationalistic newspaper, Global Times, warned yesterday that the Liaoning ?does not have the capacity to handle its tasks as it needs more adaptation to enhance its fighting capacity.?

Japan infuriates China by buying disputed isles

Still, the Global Times and other Chinese media were quick to link the launching of the Liaoning with the ongoing tensions around the region.?

Japan has been locked in a bitter spat with China over ownership of islands claimed by both countries.

The Japanese central government?s move this month to purchase the East China Sea islands, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, from their private owner led to heated nationwide protests in China that forced many Japanese companies like Panasonic, Toyota and Canon to suspend operations.?

Much at stake for US as tensions rise in troubled China Seas

While the protests have subsided, tensions have remained heightened. Just this week, China?s Vice Foreign Minister, Z|hang Zhijun told his Japanese counterpart, "China will never tolerate any bilateral actions by Japan that harm Chinese territorial sovereignty? Japan must banish illusions, undertake searching reflection and use concrete actions to amend its errors, returning to the consensus and understandings reached between our two countries' leaders."

Chinese protesters: 'The Diaoyu islands belong to China!'

Japanese embassy officials in London did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the Liaoning and ongoing territorial issues.

Tokyo has known for years about China?s aircraft carrier ambitions, but now must deal with the blowback of this announcement with an increasingly concerned and nationalist home audience.

With Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda poised to call for new elections later this year, he can ill afford to look weak on Chinese intransigence in the East China Sea.

Emotional anniversary reignites anti-Japan protests in China

The odds of war breaking out between the two largest Asian economies remain remote, but there have been clashes in the waters around the Diaoyu islands, with Chinese and now Taiwanese fishing ships entering the island chain?s territorial waters, a move the Japanese view as an intrusion on their territory.?

Though the Liaoning was formally named Tuesday, the carrier has actually been decades in the making.?The ship was built at a Ukrainian shipyard in 1988 and dubbed the Varyag.?It was purchased a decade later by China and retrofitted.

How to Assess Stock Prices for Beginners - Defensive Investing for ...

I?m reluctant to write about stock investing because I believe it?s a difficult subject to deal with which I?m not an expert on. On top of that, I do not have too many experiences with stocks that investors may want to read about. But I realized that not all people are in that stage of their investing experience to want to read advanced tips on stocks. Some may just be beginning to invest and may want to hear how I started.

For those of you who may just be interested to know, I?d like to share some of the principles I found in the book ?The Intelligent Investor? which I used to pick stocks to invest in. These principles were not developed by me because I?m not competent to do that. Instead these are words of wisdom from professionals who knew what they were talking about.

Philippine Stock Market

I may just have been lucky to start my stock investment in a time when the market was trending upwards. But I know that since I invested a portion of my cash in the Philippine stock market on March of this year, my investment has gained 28% in value. That?s a really good performance over a six-month period. I doubt if that?s sustainable. I think it will depend with the market condition in the future and how the companies I chose to invest in will perform.

Nevertheless, I found the tips in the book reasonable. They offer practical guidelines that were formulated from an analysis of how the stock market works and how investors normally behave. The experts know where the risks are so they are better equipped to tell us how to guard ourselves from pitfalls we would normally not see.

I believe someone who is new to stock investing should be cautious. This thing is risky so a new investor should go out of his way to lessen his exposure to unexpected events. With this in mind, I thought the tips for defensive investors were right on target. A defensive investor is the one who purposely guard against the risks with investing by taking relatively conservative steps.

Stock Price

A particular concept that I would like to focus on is the price of the stock. When you look at any stock in the stock market, you are only presented with two information. The first is the company trading initial (such as ALI for Ayala Land, Inc.) and the second is the price it is selling for. The question that should be foremost to the mind of the investor is whether the price of a stock is reasonable or not. Is it too expensive or is it cheap?

To determine if the price of a stock is worth it or not, you ought to know the value of the stock. The objective value of a stock can be determined by using some basic accounting concepts. If this is unfamiliar territory for you, don?t worry. To put it simply, you just need to know the book value of the stock and compare it with how much the stock is being sold for. Book value is an accounting concept. You may think of it as simply the amount left for business owners in the event that a business is liquidated after all debts have been paid.

If you?ve bought a company?s stocks, you own a part of that business. Of course the number of the stocks you own determines the extent of your ownership. The book value of each share of stock can be determined by dividing the amount left for owners by the total number of company stocks there are.

Price vs Book Value

If you think this is difficult to determine, worry no further. Book value as compared with the stock price is available through a metric which is called price-to-book value. This number gives you the current price of the stock divided by its book value. Finance websites such as bloomberg.com readily has this number for everyone to see.

The author of ?The Intelligent Investor?, Benjamin Graham, suggests that a defensive investor set a limit to the price of any stock he buys. That limit he said should be at 1 and a half times of the book value of the stock. This rule on top of others mentioned in the book will eliminate several stocks available in the market today. The author justifies doing so in order for the defensive investor to be on the safe side.

I?ll expound on the other parts of these investing rules for the defensive investor on the next several posts. I hope these discussions will be thorough enough for beginners to appreciate. Moreover, I wish I could relate the articles together in a cohesive manner to enable better understanding and usefulness.?

But if you have questions now, go hit the comments section.

Suicide bomber kills 2, injures 45 at Catholic church in Nigeria

BAUCHI, Nigeria (AP) ? A suicide car bomber attacked a Catholic church conducting Mass in northern Nigeria on Sunday, killing two people and wounding another 45 in a region under assault by a radical Islamist sect, officials said.

An Associated Press journalist heard the explosion after 9 a.m. Sunday in the city of Bauchi, which has seen a number of bombings and shootings blamed on the sect known as Boko Haram. The blast appeared to hit a parking lot alongside the St. John's Catholic Church in the city.

Police and military surrounded the church and did not allow journalists inside the cordon. Later at a nearby hospital, Bauchi deputy police commissioner T. Stevens told journalists told that the bomber had been stopped at the church's gate, where he detonated the explosives packed inside his car.

Doctors cautioned more could die from their injuries.

"The situation has been brought under control," Stevens said. "We have our men minding all areas."

Stevens said no group or individual had claimed responsibility for the attack, though suspicion immediately fell on Boko Haram. The sect, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language of Nigeria's north, has been waging an increasingly bloody fight against nation's weak central government. More than 680 people have died in drive-by killings and bombings blamed on Boko Haram this year alone, according to an AP count. The sect has demanded the release of all its captive members and has called for strict Shariah law to be implemented across the entire country.

The sect has used suicide car bombs against churches in the past, most noticeably a 2011 Christmas Day attack on a Catholic church in Madalla near Nigeria's capital. That attack and assaults elsewhere in the country killed at least 44 people. An unclaimed car bombing on Easter in Kaduna killed at least 38 people on a busy roadway after witnesses say it was turned away from a church.

Attacks against churches by the sect have waned in recent weeks. Nigeria's military claimed it killed the sect's spokesman and a commander Sept. 17 outside the city of Kano, potentially shaking up a sect that has continued attacks despite a tighter military presence in northern cities.

The killing of members of the sect's senior leadership comes as the group recently changed some of its tactics and attacked more than 30 mobile phone towers throughout northern Nigeria, disrupting communications in a nation reliant on cellular phones.

Saturday night, the military conducted door-to-door searches in the northern cities of Damaturu and Potiskum, areas now under a 24-hour curfew that have been hard-hit by the sect.

President Obama argues against Mitt Romney's 'top-down economics'

MILWAUKEE - President Barack Obama worked to squash GOP hopes for a resurgence in pivotal Wisconsin on Saturday, pushing back against his GOP rival's complaints about an overly intrusive government and attracting his biggest crowd of the campaign. Mitt Romney took precious time away from campaigning in the battleground states to troll for cash in California and kept up his criticism of the president for fostering a culture of dependency.

The president faulted Romney for advancing a top-down economic approach that "never works."

"The country doesn't succeed when only the folks at the very top are doing well," he said. "We succeed when the middle class is doing well."

Obama, speaking to an energized throng of 18,000 people in an at-times-rainy outdoor amphitheater, made a point of renewing his pledge to create a million manufacturing jobs as he campaigned in a state whose manufacturing industry has been hard hit in recent years.

With just six weekends left before Election Day, both candidates were devoting considerable time to raising cash to continue bankrolling the deluge of ads already saturating hotly contested states.

Baseball great Hank Aaron supplied the star power at Obama's Milwaukee fundraisers.

"As one who wore the number 44 on his back for decades, I ask you to join me in helping the 44th president of the United States hit a grand slam," said Aaron.

Romney, who is expected to launch a more aggressive campaign schedule in the coming week, hunted for West Coast cash, if not votes, at a private fundraiser near San Diego and headed for another in Los Angeles. Some Republicans have grumbled that he's not spending enough time with voters in swing states, and Romney seemed to take note of that sentiment.

"I've got good news: This is the last fundraiser in San Diego," Romney told supporters. "I'm not even going to be able to go home today. We're just coming to town to see you and keep the campaign going. It's nonstop."

Romney adviser Kevin Madden said the GOP nominee would begin "a really intense battleground state schedule." The former Massachusetts governor will campaign in Colorado, Ohio and Virginia in the coming week.

With running mates Joe Biden and Paul Ryan campaigning in New England and Florida, respectively, the presidential campaign was spread far and wide - both geographically and strategically. Biden revved up union activists poised to canvass for votes in New Hampshire while Ryan appealed to Hispanic voters in Miami and talked space policy in Orlando.

It was Obama's first visit to Wisconsin since February, and the president was intent on shoring up support in Ryan's home state. Obama's politicking included an unscheduled stop at a local deli, where he tried out some bratwurst in a pretzel roll with spicy mustard - and managed to chat up a few patrons from Ohio, another crucial state.

Obama won Wisconsin easily in 2008 but Ryan is popular here and recent polls have Obama up by single digits. The GOP showed its organizational strength in fending off efforts to recall Republican Gov. Scott Walker, but Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said Democrats "continue to have a strategic advantage," with more field offices and political infrastructure in the state.

With absentee voting already under way in the state, first lady Michelle Obama will campaign there next week.

Obama made the case against Romney before a crowd at the Milwaukee Theater, countering Romney's call to change Washington from the inside with an appeal to voters to help him break through partisan gridlock with pressure on Congress from the outside. He said that despite economic troubles, his administration has made progress and has made "practical and specific" proposals to create jobs.

"We've seen half a million new jobs in manufacturing, the fastest pace since the 1990s," he said. "And so the choice now is, do we reverse that progress or do we move forward?

Romney, at his fundraiser near San Diego, said Obama was "taking Americans on a course that is extremely foreign to us."

"One would suggest that government knows better than free people," he said. "It's a pathway to become like Europe, and Europe doesn't work there. It's never going to work here. It's even possible we could be on a pathway to become California -- I don't want that either."

In advance of Obama's visit, Romney's campaign made the argument that Obama's failure to turn around the economy had Wisconsin voters looking for a different path. Walker said the president had a "Wisconsin problem." The state's 7.5 percent unemployment rate is below the national average, but manufacturing has struggled.

The Republican National Committee released a web video, "Since You've Been Gone," highlighting recent GOP organizing efforts in the state and Walker's success in fending off recall.

Messina saw good signs all over, saying, "We're either tied or in the lead in every battleground state 45 days out. I think you will see a tightening in the national polls going forward."

Ryan, campaigning in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood, reinforced Romney's argument that Obama hasn't been able to make needed changes in Washington, poking at the president's recent comment that it's hard to change Washington from the inside without mobilizing public pressure on Congress from the outside.

"Why do we send presidents to the White House in the first place?" Ryan asked. "We send presidents to change and fix the mess in Washington, and if this president has admitted that he can't change Washington, then you know what? We need to change presidents."

He also faulted Obama for a "policy of appeasement" toward the Castro regime in Cuba, saying all the president had done was "reward more despotism."

Obama has eased restrictions to allow Americans to travel to Cuba and to let Cuban-Americans to send money to family on the island. But the president has stopped well-short of discussing lifting the 50-year-old economic embargo, which is widely viewed in Latin America as a failure and has complicated U.S. relationships in the region.

Campaign spokeswoman Jenn Psaki said the president had supported democracy movements on the island and worked to give people there more say in their futures.

In an appearance in Orlando, not far from Florida's space coast, Ryan criticized the president for putting the U.S. space program "on a path where we are conceding our global position as the unequivocal leader in space." The Obama campaign responded that Ryan has proposed deep cuts in spending for space exploration.

Underscoring the importance of grass-roots efforts in the campaign's final days, Biden rallied union workers at a Teamsters union hall in Manchester, N.H., saying their organizing work would be the "antidote" to millions spent on advertising by Republican-leaning super PACs.

Biden said it was because of unions that the U.S. has a strong middle class, and he accused Romney and Ryan of having "a completely different value set, a completely different vision."

"They're doubling down on everything that caused the economic crisis in the first place," he said.

The GOP nominee is feeling fundraising pressure: Last month, for the first time in four months, Obama and the Democratic Party raised more than Romney and the Republican Party, $114 million to $111.6 million.

Lyon Porter | Town Residential | Hockey Real Estate Agent

Lyon Porter as a member of the Richmond Riverdogs and his Town Residential headshot

Many New York sales agents have come to the business of real estate from a wide range of other professions. In an ongoing series, TheRealDeal.com will profile brokers for whom selling properties represents a major career transition.

Real estate pros have the reputation for being aggressive. Lyon Porter, a former professional hockey player who recently began selling commercial and residential real estate at Town Residential, embraces that. Porter sat down with The Real Deal to discuss what his fellow athletes look for in a New York City apartment, the nameless neighborhood that he calls home, and how his sports injuries prepared him to sell New York real estate.

Which teams did you play for?
I played for the Adirondack Frostbite, the Syracuse Crunch and the Richmond Riverdogs. I lived in 10 cities in 15 years. I left home at 16.

Where was home?
Shaker Heights, Ohio.

Do you still paly recreationally?
I do. I play over at Chelsea Piers. I play with a group of guys who also used to be professionals.

Did you get terribly injured?
I cracked a hip socket, separated both shoulders, got a lot of stitches. ? These aren?t all my real teeth. The first breath of cold air after chipping a tooth is no fun. And getting your nose broken is probably one of the worst, because you can?t see.

Why?
Your sinuses, they kind of ? come out.

Your nose been put back together very well.
Thank you. I still can?t breathe out of it.

How many times was it broken?
I don?t know. I fought a lot.

How has that helped or harmed you as a real estate pro?
It?s like what they say about boxing: ??it?s more important to be able to take a punch than to give a punch.? So, in real estate you take a lot of punches. You get a lot of doors closed in your face. In hockey there is constant rejection ? having to try out, having to move [cities], having to go forward when people say you shouldn?t. Especially being from the U.S. when most players are Canadian [can be tough].

Was there anti-American sentiment?
I was often the only American on my team. But having to go up against those obstacles was helpful, because now I don?t mind someone saying no to me.

It?s mental toughness, basically. The same in real estate as in the rest of life.
Yeah, it?s like when you get traded, you can?t take it personally. The only thing you can control is how you perform. And it?s the same in real estate.

Is there a particular kind of clientele you specialize in? Do you find you can bond with clients over professional sports?
I do have some clients who are professional athletes.

Like who?
I?m not going to name names. But I have some pro hockey players and other pro athletes. I can relate to them, to having a life on the road. I can relate to not wanting to live in a hotel.

What do you think professional athletes need in a home?
I think actually having a home, since they are on the road so much, it?s very important to them. And almost exclusively athletes buy condos [instead of co-ops] because they might get traded the next day.

And they must like full service amenities?
Well, we have the Town Residential concierge service. It?s nice to be able to give them something to lean on. It?s a free service to clients. It?s been an amazing thing for this type of clientele. Even just for a busy New Yorker, being able to get a reservation at the Nomad tonight if you want it.

Before joining Town you were in graduate school?
Yes, I had worked in real estate and did my masters in development at NYU?s Shack Institute [of Real Estate]. I did full -time [but] at night. And I also was still working with C&K Properties, assisting them with private equity real estate acquisitions.

How did working in private equity inform your knowledge of real estate?
Brooks Crowley, who I worked with there, was invaluable. Two guys who started from scratch. They owned 3 million square feet in the city. ?[The experience] really helped me with my investor clients and developers I am working with now, to see it through their eyes.

Where do you live?
In the 20s. It?s just below Murray Hill, a lot of people would call it Kips Bay. If you look at it on a taxi map, it?s a gray area.

What kind of branding do you think it should get?
I
t used to be called Rose Hill, but that never caught on in the popular nomenclature. I don?t know if I would call it a name at this point though. I have a rent stabilized apartment so I didn?t choose the neighborhood, it chose me.

You aren?t gonna tell us how much you pay?
No. But it is a two bedroom, thank God, because I just had a son two months ago.

Congratulations. Do you want your son to play hockey?
He can play whatever he wants.

When it comes to hockey, can you tell when a kid is really young if they will be good?
Yeah, and they could tell that I was a terrible skater; I just loved hockey. I was never the skill guy. I made it really far as a really unskilled guy.

Did you make up for a lack of technique with aggression or something?
I did. I was a grinder. If I had to fight or hit someone, [I would].

Would you characterize yourself as a real estate pro in sort of the same way? Always willing to fight?
I think in this business, in this city, you have to have something extra. Whether it?s being able to take punches or being able to swim with sharks. Anyone successful has something extra, and I think I gained mine from hockey. When someone shuts the door in my face I just say, ?Ok, well I?ll knock on it again tomorrow.? I don?t mind hearing ?no,? in fact I don?t even hear it. And that?s why this business is a perfect fit for me.

Arkansas coach Smith bankruptcy shows $25.7M debt

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) ? Arkansas coach John L. Smith is trying to wipe away $25.7 million in debt in bankruptcy court and hang onto $1.2 million in retirement accounts and some personal property, all while he leads the Razorbacks through one of the strangest seasons in team history.

Smith, who loudly implored reporters to "smile" at a press conference this week, has a meeting with a long list of creditors at U.S. Bankruptcy court in Fayetteville on Oct. 12, the day before the Razorbacks host Kentucky.

Smith was coaching Louisville when he began investing in real estate, which he has said, was profitable until land values took a nosedive. Smith filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Sept. 6, and court papers filed Wednesday detail the depth of his financial losses.

As of the filing, Smith had received $115,000 from his 10-month, $850,000 contract with Arkansas, plus $35,643 from his alma mater, Weber State, which he left before coaching a game to return to Fayetteville after Bobby Petrino's firing. He also picked up $9,810 from Nike and $1,057 from a football camp, according to the court documents.

Smith has two retirement accounts, each worth about $600,000, which his filing lists as exempt from liquidation, along with household furnishings.

The filing lists 26 unsecured creditors, with the largest debt ? $20 million ? claimed by Terra Springs LLC of Louisville. Other debts include $2 million to Republic Bank and $902,000 to King Southern Bank, both in Louisville. He also owes about $10,000 to American Express.

Smith paid $20,000 up front to his attorney, Jill Jacoway of Fayetteville. She wasn't in her office Thursday and didn't immediately respond to email requests for comment.

Once the Chapter 7 proceeding is complete, Smith will be released from the debts, assuming there are no ensuing complications.

Smith revealed his financial problems to The Associated Press during the summer, saying he anticipated a bankruptcy filing and that he didn't want it to distract the team or embarrass the university. Athletic director Jeff Long said at the time that Smith was candid about his debt situation in talks before he was hired.

"It's something that's happened. I made some mistakes, and to be honest with you, I'm a football coach, not a businessman," Smith said at the time.

Since declaring bankruptcy on Sept. 6, then-No. 8 Arkansas lost in overtime to Louisiana-Monroe, 34-31, and was shutout by No. 1 Alabama, 52-0. Starting quarterback Tyler Wilson was knocked out of the Louisiana-Monroe game with a head injury and other key players have been sidelined by injuries.

All this followed Petrino's April 1 motorcycle crash, which led to revelations he had his 25-year-old mistress on the back of the bike and that he'd hired her for an on-campus recruiting job. Long fired Petrino 10 days after the accident.

The Razorbacks (1-2) are preparing to host Rutgers (3-0) on Saturday. It remains unclear whether Wilson will be under center.
