As Facebook Rumors Swirl, Opera Plays Up Its Social Cred In New Opera Mini 7 Browser For ?Basic? Phones

opera_mini_7_j2me_smart_page_social_in_phoneTalk about coincidence. Just earlier this week, in a post on Facebook and the possibility of buying web browsing company Opera and facial recognition company Face.com, we highlighted how a new version of Opera Mini would feature much stronger social integration -- specifically aimed at the feature phone segment -- both key points for Facebook. Today, Opera came good with a full release of that Opera Mini browser, Opera Mini 7 (but?still has no official comment on those acquisition reports). As expected, the new browser is aimed not at Apple and Android-based smartphones but more "basic" devices -- specifically those built on Java ME, Nokia's S60 and BlackBerry (yes, Opera categorizes RIM's smartphone as basic). Opera is using the release to incorporate some new, key social features on a new Smart Page to increase the time spent by users on its own pages and in its browser.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- If you are a white girl, a black girl or a black boy, exposure to today's electronic media in the long run tends to make you feel worse about yourself. If you're a white boy, you'll feel better, according to a new study led by an Indiana University professor.

Nicole Martins, an assistant professor of telecommunications in the IU College of Arts and Sciences, and Kristen Harrison, professor of communication studies at the University of Michigan, also found that black children in their study spent, on average, an extra 10 hours a week watching television.

"We can't deny the fact that media has an influence when they're spending most of their time -- when they're not in school -- with the television," Martins said.

Harrison added, "Children who are not doing other things besides watching television cannot help but compare themselves to what they see on the screen."

Their paper has been published in Communication Research. Martins and Harrison surveyed a group of about 400 black and white preadolescent students in communities in the Midwest over a yearlong period. Rather than look at the impact of particular shows or genres, they focused on the correlation between the time in front of the TV and the impact on their self-esteem.

"Regardless of what show you're watching, if you're a white male, things in life are pretty good for you," Martins said of characters on TV. "You tend to be in positions of power, you have prestigious occupations, high education, glamorous houses, a beautiful wife, with very little portrayals of how hard you worked to get there.

"If you are a girl or a woman, what you see is that women on television are not given a variety of roles," she added. "The roles that they see are pretty simplistic; they're almost always one-dimensional and focused on the success they have because of how they look, not what they do or what they think or how they got there.

"This sexualization of women presumably leads to this negative impact on girls."

With regard to black boys, they are often criminalized in many programs, shown as hoodlums and buffoons, and without much variety in the kinds of roles they occupy.

"Young black boys are getting the opposite message: that there is not lots of good things that you can aspire to," Martins said. "If we think about those kinds of messages, that's what's responsible for the impact.

"If we think just about the sheer amount of time they're spending, and not the messages, these kids are spending so much time with the media that they're not given a chance to explore other things they're good at, that could boost their self-esteem."

Martins said their study counters claims by producers that programs have been progressive in their depictions of under-represented populations. An earlier study co-authored by her and Harrison suggests that video games "are the worst offenders when it comes to representation of ethnicity and gender."

Other research is starting to show the impacts of other kinds of entertainment sources, such as video games and hand-held devices. It indicates that young people are becoming creative at "media multitasking."

"Even though these new technologies are becoming more available, kids still spend more time with TV than anything else," Martins said.

Interestingly, the young people were asked about their consumption of print media, but the results were not statistically significant.

Martins conducted the research while she was completing her Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, as part of a larger longitudinal study done with her co-author, Harrison. They sought out certain school districts in Illinois because of their diversity, but African-Americans were the predominant minority group.

Hopes for US recovery, China stimulus help markets

LONDON (AP) ? Global markets rose Tuesday on signs of improvement in the U.S. housing market and on hopes China will act to support growth in its economy, the world's second-largest.

A survey by S&P/Case Shiller showed home prices rose in major U.S. cities in March for the first time in seven months. Combined with record low mortgage rates and a steady improvement in the labor market, the report suggested that the U.S. property market ? which was at the heart of the global financial crisis in 2008 ? is strengthening.

"With the economic recovery now on firmer ground, we see no reason to alter our view that U.S. house prices have now found a floor," said Ed Stansfield, chief property economist at Capital Economics.

The figures helped offset the impact of a more downbeat report showing U.S. consumer optimism fell in May to the lowest in eight months. The Conference Board said its Consumer Confidence Index fell to 64.9 points, below analyst expectations.

In Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 was up 0.4 percent to 5,376.42 while Germany's DAX rose 1.1 percent to 6,393.20. The CAC-40 in Paris rose 1.1 percent to 3,076.35. The euro was up marginally at $1.2547.

Wall Street opened higher after a three-day weekend for Memorial Day holiday, with the Dow and S&P 500 both rising 1.1 percent, to 12,584.93 and 1,331.97, respectively.

Earlier, markets had been unsettled by concerns that Spain's ailing banking sector might worsen the European debt crisis.

The country's banks are sitting on massive amounts of soured real estate investments. That has led to the recent nationalization of Bankia, the country's fourth-largest lender, which revealed last week it needed more money than expected ? ?19 billion ($23.8 billion) ? in state aid to shore itself up.

Investors fear that the Spanish government, which is already under pressure to lower its debts at a time of recession and record-high unemployment, will be overwhelmed by the cost of saving the country's banking sector.

Those concerns kept pressure on Spain's Ibex, which was down 2.1 percent, with shares in Bankia dropping another 13.6 percent.

The latest bad news to hit the country was a report showing retail sales were down 9.8 percent in April in year-on-year terms, more than double the 3.8 percent fall posted in March.

The figures underlined the brutal impact that government austerity cuts and economic uncertainty are having on households. They also bolster the case for Europe to find new ways to bolster economic growth, though leaders disagree over how to achieve that.

Years of financial and economic uncertainty ? first in the global credit crunch and now in the debt crisis ? have hammered public confidence in the future of European integration, according to a survey by Pew Research across eight European Union countries, including five that use the euro.

"This crisis of confidence is evident in the economy, in the future, in the benefits of European economic integration, in EU membership, in the euro and in the free market system," Pew said in a statement accompanying its survey.

Despite those headwinds, Pew found there was no desire for those countries that use the euro to abandon the single currency.

Europe's debt crisis will remain a dominant theme for markets for weeks to come as investors gauge the likelihood that Greece might leave the eurozone after elections on June 17. If Greeks vote for parties that support the country's bailout terms, ensuring a continued flow of rescue loans, the country will hope to stay in the eurozone.

The pro-bailout parties hold a narrow lead, according to the latest polls, but uncertainty over the ultimate outcome of the elections will keep market sentiment fragile and prone to swings in mood.

Earlier in Asia, stock indexes rose on hopes that China will relax monetary policy and announce fiscal stimulus measures to offset slowing economic growth.

"This has been a predominant theme since Premier Wen Jiabao's comments showing commitment to keep China's growth from stalling," said Stan Shamu, market strategist at IG Markets.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.7 percent to close at 8,657.08 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 1.4 percent to 19,055.46. South Korea's Kospi climbed 1.4 percent after being closed Monday for a public holiday while China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 1.2 percent.

Benchmark oil for July delivery was up 80 cents to $91.66 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

You Can Sell Your Commercial Property Quickly And Easily | Honest ...

Commercial real estate relationships are very important. Even more so than residential real estate relationships. Commercial real estate deals are usually quite large ? and many people cannot handle buying a million-dollar building on their own, so you will need partners. Commercial buildings typically sell before they ever get listed as well, so you will need relationships to find out about properties for sale.

Before you start renting your buildings, make sure you have renter?s insurance. Renter?s insurance is usually a legal requirement, and will cover you in case something happens to your property. Make sure you understand your policy, and be open with your renters about what your insurance covers. Encourage them to get additional coverage if your policy does not cover their possessions.

When investing in commercial real estate, you should look over the financing and know if the mortage payment is simply interest, or whether it includes principal and interest. In addition, you should know the amortization schedule that is used to figure the principal payment. The best way to grow equity is having principal and interest payments over a short amortization period.

Get your financing taken care of in advance. Down payments on commercial properties are normally higher than on residential properties. That being said, lenders are more lenient about where you get the down payment money from, often allowing you to borrow the money from someone else. But before making an offer on a commercial property, talk to a number of different lenders, as you may not qualify for a loan from all of them. The last thing you need is to have your offer accepted, only to find that you can?t get a loan.

Try to learn what the insiders already know. To be successful in commercial real estate, you need to think like a professional. You need to know that commercially property has different values than that of residential. The income of commercial property is immediately related to usable sq. footage. This is not so with individual houses. There is much bigger cash flow to be seen with commercial property too.

What goes up, must come down has a corollary in the real estate market. What goes down, must come up. If the markets are severely depressed, you can get property for a song. If you have the means to hold on to a property until the market recovers, go ahead and buy, buy, buy because you will find yourself holding some high value properties compared to your investment when all is said and done

When considering a commercial real estate property to purchase, think about how the neighborhood will do in ten or twenty years, or an even longer period of time. You?ll want to invest for the long-term to ensure that you continue to have a strong income from any location you buy. If you think the neighborhood will only be hot for a few years, skip it.

Cardinal among plotters in Vatican scandal?

Vincenzo Pinto / AFP - Getty Images

Paolo Gabriele (bottom left), the pope's butler, was arrested three days ago for allegedly feeding documents to Italian journalists.

By msnbc.com news services

VATICAN CITY --?The worst crisis in Pope Benedict's pontificate deepened on Monday when Italian media said at least one cardinal was among those suspected of leaking sensitive documents as part of a power struggle at the top of the Catholic Church.?The pope's butler, who has been arrested, has pledged to cooperate in the probe.?

Leading Italian newspapers Corriere della Sera and Il Messaggero reported Monday that the pope's butler ? arrested three days ago for allegedly feeding documents to Italian journalists ? clearly did not act alone, and that an unidentified cardinal is suspected of playing a major role.?

The scandal exploded last week when within a few days the pope's butler was arrested, the head of the Vatican's own bank was abruptly dismissed and a book was published alleging conspiracies among the cardinals or "princes of the Church."

Vatican cops arrest pope's butler over leaked papers alleging corruption

However, the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, denied the reports that a cardinal might be the next target of the "Vatileaks" probe. He said many Vatican officials were being questioned but insisted: "There is no cardinal under suspicion."?

Meanwhile, the lawyer for the pope's butler says his client has pledged "full cooperation" in the investigation and wants the truth to come out.?

On his final day in Cuba, Pope Benedict noted that the Cuban government has taken steps to allow greater freedom of religion, but still has room for improvement. Vatican analyst George Weigel talks about the Pope's message and his meeting with Fidel Castro.

The commitment by butler Paolo Gabriele to cooperate raises the specter that higher-ranking prelates may soon be named in the scandal. Leaks of confidential Vatican correspondence have shed light on power struggles and intrigue inside the highest levels of the Catholic Church.?

Gabriele, the pope's personal butler since 2006, was arrested Wednesday evening after documents he had no business having were found inside his Vatican City apartment. He remains in detention in a Vatican detention facility, accused of theft, and has met with his wife and lawyers.?

The 46-year-old father of three was always considered extremely loyal to Benedict and his predecessor, John Paul II, for whom he briefly served. Vatican insiders said they were baffled by his alleged involvement. Gabriele's lawyer, Carlo Fusco, reported Monday that Gabriele was "very serene and calm."?

So far,?Gabriele?has been the only?one arrested, but Lombardi stressed that the investigation was continuing.?

Pope at Easter vigil: Technology without God is dangerous

The probe is working on two separate tracks. Vatican magistrates are pursuing the criminal investigation, and Gabriele was arrested as part of that. Separately, Pope Benedict appointed three cardinals to form an investigative commission to look beyond the narrow criminal scope of the leaks.?

Those cardinals have the authority to interview broadly across the Vatican bureaucracy, Lombardi said, and can both share information with Vatican prosecutors and receive information from them.?

The Catholic Church accused the nation's largest organization of American nuns of espousing "radical feminist" ideas. MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell discusses the charges with Sister Jeannine Gramick, who was once silenced by the Vatican, and Jeff Stone, communications director of Dignity USA.

They report directly to the pope, who Lombardi said, was being kept informed of the investigation.?

Like a Dan Brown book? Vatican allows mobster to be exhumed

Benedict has not commented directly on the scandal.?

Meanwhile, hundreds of demonstrators marched to St. Peter's Square on Sunday to demand information on Emanuela Orlandi, the daughter of a Vatican messenger who disappeared in 1983 at the age of 15.?

Various theories have surrounded her disappearance, linking her kidnapping to an attempt to free the Turkish gunman who shot John Paul in 1981, or to alleged Vatican financial dealings with a Rome criminal gang.?

The march came a day after an Italian prosecutor told CNN that a priest who used to run a church in Rome is under investigation on suspicion of complicity in her?abduction.

Nano vacuum tubes could give a second life to the guitarist's best friend

Nano vacuum tubes could give a second life to the guitarist's best friend

Pretty much the only place you see vacuum tubes any more is inside a quality audio amp. But, once upon a time, they were the primary ingredient in any piece of electronic equipment, including computers. The glass tubes have since been replaced with the smaller, less fragile and cheaper to manufacture silicon transistor. There are, however, disadvantages, to transistors. For one, electrons tend to move more slowly though the semiconductors, and two, they're highly susceptible to radiation. The second of those problems doesn't affect us much here on Earth, but for NASA it poses a major obstacle. Engineers have finally managed to combine the advantages of both vacuum tubes and silicon transistors, though, in what has been dubbed "nano vacuum tubes." They're created by etching tiny cavities in phosphorous-doped silicon, bordered on three sides by electrodes that form the gate, source and drain. The term "vacuum tube" is slightly misleading however, since there is no true vacuum in play. Instead, the source and drain are separated by just 150 nanometers, making it highly unlikely that flowing electrons would run into stray atoms. In addition to their space-worthy hardiness, they can also potentially operate at frequencies ten-times as higher than silicon transistors, making them a candidate to push terahertz tech from experimental to mainstream. For more, check out the source link.

Sony Removes Xperia PLAY From ICS Update List

Owners of the PLAY will no longer receive ice Cream Sandwich.

Sony has removed the Xperia PLAY device, from the list of handsets that will receive the Android 4.0 OS.

Back in December 2011, Sony released the Android 4.0 update roadmap, which listed all of the current devices were set to receive the Android 'Ice Cream Sandwich' 4.0 update.

Sony has now announced in a blog post that "after extensive in house testing with our developer teams and working with our partners, we have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich - therefore, we will not make the Android 4.0 upgrade available for Xperia PLAY."

The following handsets are still listed in the queue for the ICS update; Xperia arc, Xperia arc S, Xperia neo and neo V, Xperia mini and mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active, Xperia ray, Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman.

The Xperia PLAY shipped with a slide-out PlayStation-esque games controller, a 4in display, 512MB of RAM and 400MB of internal memory. The device also comes with an 8GB microSD card to increase the phone's available memory, but users can extend this with a 32GB card.

The device features a Qualcomm 1GHz Scorpion processor, a five-megapixel camera capable of 720p video recording, and it ran from the Android ?Gingerbread' 2.3 OS.

A Better World | The Four-Way Test ? personal ethics, business ...

If everyone used the 4-Way Test the world would be in perfect harmony. Everyone would tell the truth and never tell a lie. Everyone would be fair and share. People could work out their problems like what they should do first and last when two people want to do something different. Everybody would be nice and not fight. More people would be friends, not enemies. It would be beneficial because people would be nice and trustworthy. People would be all the previous.

People would help people in need and help people with work. We would have more schools, better schools, better colleges, and better jobs. Also the black wouldn?t fight the white and the white wouldn?t fight the black. There wouldn?t be war. Many deaths wouldn?t have happened. There would be many deaths avoided. There would be no slavery. Stuff would be finished sooner. There would be no use for weapons. There would not be any school fights at all, and I mean at all.

(AP) ? A wildfire in Michigan's Upper Peninsula grew by 17 percent to more than 21,000 acres Saturday as officials warned of tough conditions and welcomed help from water-dumping aircraft from the Michigan National Guard.

Wind gusts were predicted at 15 mph and high temperatures were in the 60s in a dry, remote part of the state where access has been tricky because there are few roads. Tahquamenon Falls State Park, a popular destination for campers seven miles from the fire, was closed.

The fire, known as the Duck Lake Fire, was 20 percent contained in Luce County, about 75 miles northeast of the Mackinac Bridge, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said. The fire was described as long and narrow, stretching 11 miles north to Lake Superior.

Fewer than 100 people have been evacuated, said Dean Wilson, a spokesman for the fire management team.

More than 40 structures have been threatened and at least six are lost. It's not clear whether they were homes or outbuildings. Wilson said he didn't have an update Saturday.

"Structure protection is high priority and is being closely monitored from the air. ... Potential for blow-up conditions" continues, the Department of Natural Resources said in a statement.

The Rainbow Lodge, which includes a campground, motel and cabins near Lake Superior, was closed. A recorded message by co-owner Kathy Robinson said she had been evacuated and that the property may have been damaged by fire.

"I'm sorry," she said.

Some people more than 100 miles away in the northern Lower Peninsula reported smelling smoke. The Michigan National Guard dispatched four aircraft and 40 people to the Duck Lake fire and another in Schoolcraft County.

"The Blackhawks typically hoist 900-gallon buckets to unload water on fires. This method has proven very successful in wildfires in other regions," said a spokesman, Capt. Aaron Jenkins.

Wilson said curious people on all-terrain vehicles must stay away.

"It's not a big problem but it does exist. If the wind picks up, the ignition of dry fuel is almost instantaneous," he said.

We all know our service members and returning vets are committed to our national security -- but as they return home, that mission extends beyond the battlefield, as vets work to ensure that future generations never go to war over resources.?The need for sustainable energy and sustainable food are what many of the wars around the world are fought over now -- our returning marines know it, and they're doing something about it.

Watch as Dylan Ratigan talks about the connection between vets, jobs, sustainability and security with Liz Perez of GC Green, and John Hofmeister, former CEO of Shell Oil and founder of Citizens for Affordable Energy, as well as some amazing veterans he met on the road on the West Coast who are working for change.

Fantastic Methods If You're Looking To Buy Real Estate | Online ...

Purchasing a home is probably going to be the biggest financial decision in your life. Always make sure that you?re fully informed before you put your money down. Check out this article and find out what you?re missing about buying real estate.

Ask your realtor for information on sales from their brokerage or themselves over the last year. This can be a determining factor in whether or not you have a strong enough realtor making decisions with you. This gives you a good idea of both their experience and strengths in the real estate market.

Before you even step foot into a mortgage lender?s office, check out your credit. You do not waste your time or the time of the Realtor by applying for a loan that you cannot get because your credit is not good. You can check your credit score online or at a credit bureau office.

If you find the right real estate, do not hesitate to move forward. Many buyers spend time wondering if there might be something better or if they have made the right decisions. Not making a move on the right property can result in someone else purchasing before you can get the deal done.

Always be sure that you check the wiring in any property you buy. You will need an inspector for this most likely, but because the wires are behind the walls, damage is something you won?t be able to see with the naked eye. The last thing you need is an unexpected electrical fire in your property.

When buying real estate, make sure to investigate similar real estate properties in the area to ensure that the price being charged is in line with the neighborhood or property type. If the property is overpriced in relation to the neighborhood, it gives you some negotiating power with the seller.

When you?re buying a house, make sure you check first to find out if any unauthorized work has been done on the house. If the previous owner has added on to the house or remodeled part of it without the proper permits, you could end up being responsible for bringing the work up to code.

Finding the right neighborhood for first- time buyers can be hard. Many people struggle with this. A great way to find the perfect neighborhood for you is by doing your research online and touching base with some local real estate agents. Many websites online deal with statistics of what kind of people live in an area and how high or low a crime rate is. Calling a real estate agent in a local area can be of big help too; they can give their personal opinions of a given neighborhood. These are some tips to help you find the right place to live.

It?s important that you?re working hard to make the right decision. Take advice, but don?t let others make the decision for you. Take advantage of these tips, they will assist you in your decision-making. You can find the right property, and even save some time and money in the process.

Rep. Karen Bass: A new alliance for the future

When President Obama kicked off the 35th annual G8 Summit he reminded me of an all too familiar adage: Give a man fish and you'll feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you'll feed him for a lifetime.

Flanked by African Heads of State, Administration officials, foreign dignitaries and the rock star turned philanthropist, Bono, the President announced the launch of a new global public-private partnership to the address the very serious and persistent food crisis affecting millions around the world.

The ONE Campaign reports that low product yields, under-investment in agricultural sectors and recent spikes in food prices have left nearly one billion people in need of food and proper nutrition. If immediate and sustained action is not taken we risk derailing not only food aid but all development efforts and losing the countless many caught in balance.

Called the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition, this new initiative intends to help raise 50 million Africans out of poverty within 10 years by strengthening food security policies. It will initially focus its efforts in Tanzania, Ethiopia and Ghana but add additional nations in subsequent years. By working to develop comprehensive national food policies, increase agricultural investments, and partner with the private sector, the Alliance aims to involve a global coalition of actors toward rapid and sustained growth.

It is truly an extraordinary and ambitious mission that will require significant political will and resources let alone global resolve.

What is perhaps most exciting about this approach is not that the U.S. is leveraging its own position to garner broad G8 support but the premise itself: to create conditions where nations and their people no longer depend on aid and are the architects of their own future. If the Alliance and other development programs are to succeed then the product of our effort will result in nations that are self-sufficient with their citizens fully capable of charting their own course.

The President's announcement is equally remarkable because it takes a bold step by not merely involving government but leveraging the private sector from the start. Some 45 local to multinational companies have already committed $3 billion to support and spur agriculture investment that will greatly improve crop yields, nutrition and feed some of the world's most poor and vulnerable.

As I look at the success of programs like President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), and the philanthropy of people like Bill and Melinda Gates, U.S. foreign assistance both public and private is better than it has ever been. My fellow colleagues on Capitol Hill, many of whom have fought hard battles to protect foreign aid budgets in the face of unfair criticism, should be commended for their unwavering support and ensuring the U.S. continues to take a leadership role in its overseas generosity.

The message to the naysayers is clear: We're not throwing precious and limited resources at a problem. Innovative solutions abound that are sustainable investments that allow recipients of aid to be equal partners in designing and implementing programs that are specific to local contexts. They are working; they are saving lives; they are creating bright futures.

President Obama's New Alliance announcement is an acknowledgment that the global community which includes the private sector is capable of achieving an enormous impact even in an economic environment where many nations are being forced to retreat from their promises.

Discussions at this year's G8 summit covered the protracted global economic crisis, grave concerns throughout the Middle East, and the shaky resilience of democracy in Africa and beyond. Despite these very serious challenges that require our focused attention, I am quietly optimistic that the through innovation and partnership we can solve enduring challenges that affect so many.
