Ga. Board of Regents approves KSU football plan

The Georgia Board of Regents has approved Kennesaw State University?s financial plan to support a NCAA Division I football program.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://bit.ly/XA0TL8) reports the Board of Regents approved the school?s plan to increase student fees by $100 per semester beginning this fall to support the football program.

The increase is expected to translate to a $4.8 million increase in revenue in its first year. School officials say an anonymous donor has also pledged $5 million over a 10-year period to support the program.

In addition to creating a football team, the university also plans to add a women?s lacrosse program.

The university competes in seven men?s sports and nine women?s sports in the Atlantic Sun Conference. With more than 24,600 students enrolled, Kennesaw State is Georgia?s third-largest university.

Finding Self-Discipline in Others

Cover Image: January 2013 Scientific American MagazineSee Inside

People who lack restraint seek out colleagues and friends who are not impulsive

My high school classmate Tom Gordon was everyone's choice for ?least likely to succeed.? He drank too much and drove too fast, and he got busted for petty theft again and again. He skipped school as often as he showed up, and he was too undisciplined for sports or other organized activities. When he did get hired for part-time jobs, he would either quit or get himself fired soon after. He was a loser.

So imagine my bewilderment when I ran into Tom (whose name I have changed to protect his identity) some years later. He was sitting in a local diner, drinking coffee and reading several newspapers, including the Wall Street Journal. It turns out that a few years out of school, he had married one of our quieter and more studious classmates. He had started surrounding himself with her solid and conscientious friends, leaving the bad boys of high school behind. He no longer ran with a fast crowd, and he rarely even had a drink. He was an engaged father and had a small business. He lived a life of moderation.

Many people know a Tom Gordon or did at one time, and most of their stories do not have such a happy outcome. Indeed, most kids with poor self-control grow up to be adults with poor self-control. So what turned Tom around? Why didn't his undisciplined nature lead him inevitably into a life of trouble and failure, as we all had predicted?

New research may offer some insights into Tom's mysterious turnaround. A team of Duke University psychological scientists, headed by Gr?inne Fitzsimons, has been studying people with poor self-discipline, in particular the idea that the Tom Gordons of the world may be aware of their shortcomings?and compensate for them. Perhaps, they suggest, Tom deliberately chose a new social circle?both wife and friends?as a self-regulatory strategy, riding the disciplinary coattails of the more fortunate.

Hardware-wise, the Ivory comes equipped with a 1GHz single-core processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory, which can be further expanded up to 32GB via microSD memory card.

On the back, the device features a 3.2-megapixel photo snapper with video recording, while in the front there?s a secondary VGA camera for video calls.

Immigration Reform Must Happen In Order To Secure The Border

Bloomberg News:

There?s a basic chicken-and-egg problem that has long bedeviled the U.S. immigration debate: What comes first, a secure border or effective reform?

For decades, ?securing our borders? has been the rallying cry among many Americans concerned about illegal immigration. The blueprint on immigration reform recently released by a bipartisan Senate group states that the path to legalized status for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. is ?contingent upon our success in securing our borders and addressing visa overstays.? This sentiment is echoed by conservatives in the House and in many statehouses, particularly in the Southwest.

Unfortunately, this formulation has it exactly backward. To achieve a secure border, we must first have effective immigration reform.

Michael Kors lifts FY outlook; shares jump to life high

(Reuters) - Fashion company Michael Kors Holdings Ltd raised its full-year forecast after handily beating Wall Street estimates for its third-quarter results with the help of strong sales of luxury items in North America and Europe during the holidays.

The results sent the company's shares up 13 percent to a lifetime high of $64.80 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Comparable-store sales rose 41 percent in North America during the holiday quarter, while those in Europe rose 58 percent.

Kors, known for its designer wear, handbags and watches, said conversion of its department store locations into branded shop-in-shops pulled in more customers and generated higher sales volume.

Chief Executive John Idol said the quarter saw strong demand for luxury items from Europe and North America and expects the global luxury market to keep its pace of growth.

The Luxury Goods Worldwide Market Study of 2012 estimated that the luxury market would grow from $251 billion in 2011 to between $314 billion and $327 billion in 2015.

Kors, which went public in December 2011, has challenged bigger rival Coach Inc in the affordable luxury segment and seems to be gaining market share, according to analysts. Last month, Coach reported a 2 percent decline in North American same-store sales.

Fewer shoppers visited Coach's own full-service stores and factory outlets during the holiday season, which the company attributed to a cautious mood among consumers.

"Obviously they (Kors) are gaining market share from Coach , but its not only Coach ... it is also the little guys that are getting squeezed in a highly competitive market," Morningstar analyst Paul Swinand told Reuters.

The company said it expects an increase of low-to-mid 20s in same-store sales in the current quarter.

Kors also raised its full-year earnings-per-share estimate to between $1.80 and $1.82 from its previous range of $1.48 to $1.50. It also said it now sees full-year revenue at about $2.1 billion, higher than the $1.86 billion to $1.96 billion forecast earlier.

Analysts had estimated full-year earnings of $1.57 per share on revenue of $2.01 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Net income rose four fold to $130.0 million, or 64 cents per share, up from $32.0 million, or 20 cents per share, a year earlier. Analysts had expected 41 cents per share.

Revenue jumped 70 percent to $636.8 million in the quarter ended December, well ahead of the $540.3 million analysts had anticipated.

Afcon 2013 Review: Who were the under and over achievers as Nigeria are crowned kings of Africa ?

Nigeria defeated Burkina Faso in Sundays final to become the new kings of Africa. So how did the likes of Ivory Coast, Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde and others live up to their differing expectations?

Nigeria ran out triumphant in Johannesburg last night and claimed their second ever African Nations trophy with a 1-0 win over Burkina Faso. The Super Eagles were written off before the tournament due to their recent poor tournament form but proved all their doubters wrong to emerge as kings of Africa.

For Stephen Keshi the manager it was a proud and deserved moment. His squad selection was called into question before the start of the tournament but it appears he got the balance just right. It was made even more special by the fact Keshi was a member of the playing team that won the competition in 1994.

5 Chances To Win A Copy of FIFA 13 Ultimate Team for PS3 or Xbox

For Burkina Faso it was a true shame; the team not given a hope before the start of the competition were defeated by another vital goal from Sunday Mba and despite their best efforts they simply could not break down a resolute Nigerian defence and the dream faded away.

So other than the final result, empty stadiums, vuvuzelas, bad refereeing and even worse goalkeeping what were the other tales from the Afcon 2013?

Under Achievers

Algeria went into the competition with high hopes as one of the highest ranked teams in the competition. They played delightful passing football and dominated possession in the majority of their games but The Group of Death claimed them. Losses to Tunisia and Togo were enough to dump them out of the competition. In fact for North African teams in general it was a poor tournament in the Southern realm. Morocco and Tunisia also failed to progress past the Group Stage.

The Ivory Coast emerged victorious from Group D and the perennial favourites once again seemed set on a march toward glory. However they did not prepare for Nigeria and Sunday ?The Elephant Slayer? Mba from dumping them out at the quarter final stage. While a semi-final spot for Ghana may have seemed a decent performance they would have expected to beat Les Etalons once they were there.

For Zambia this year?s edition brought them back to earth with a bang after the jubilation of a year ago.

Over Achievers

Once again the Afcon produced a few neutral favourites. Burkina Faso an obvious choice after their heroics at making it to the final. They were my outside bet before the competition and thanks to Sunday Mba I found myself out of pocket in the betting stakes but, c?est la vie.

The Blue Sharks of Cape Verde also performed wonders. Dumping Cameroon out in qualifying was not enough they also had to claim the scalps of Morocco and Angola before faltering against the Black Stars in the quarters.

Togo must also be commended for escaping the Group of Death while even South Africa over-achieved. The host nation maybe; but on paper their team was not one of the eight strongest here so making it to the quarters was a great achievement; losing on penalties to Mali a stinging blow.

Which brings us to The Eagles; led by the talismanic Seydou Keita they finished third once again and proved themselves one of the continents premium forces.

All in all the competition may not have had the drama and heroism of Gabon/Equatorial Guinea in 2012 but there were still plenty of stories to tell from South Africa.

And who can forget this moment?.

What was your favourite moment of the competition?
