Dinner's on George Clooney in Germany!

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Dinner's on George Clooney! One group of diners at the Grill Royal restaurant in Berlin?were treated to a free meal because the actor was worried that he and his friends at a nearby table were making too much noise, Clooney's representative has confirmed to TODAY.

Mario Anzuoni / Reuters

According to English-language publication The Local, German newspaper Bild reported that Clooney and Co. weren't disturbing the others in any way.

"They had behaved in a very cultivated manner," one man in the group told the paper, "I was stunned."

According to The Local, the man never recognized Clooney, even when he stopped by the star's table to leave a business card in hopes he could repay the gesture some day.

The newspaper reported that the dinner bill was around 100 Euros, or $135 U.S.

It's far from Clooney's first generous gesture. Back in October, paparazzi captured a photo of the actor giving money to a man sitting on a New York street wearing military dog tags.

Clooney is in Germany to direct and star in "Monuments Men," an upcoming big-screen drama also starring Daniel Craig and Cate Blanchett. Based on Robert M. Edsel's book, the film is about a group of Allied art experts racing to save priceless artworks from destruction by the Nazis.

Cabin Renovation: Simple Green Living | this time - this space

Umbrellas-PublicDomainThirty years ago my husband and I were city dwellers still spending most of our time working? for someone else.? Then we made a life changing decision, a decision to make our simple dream come true.? We moved to where we wanted to live,? purchased a home, committed to voluntary simplicity and built our own business from the bottom up.

A decade later we purchased a larger piece of land and built our own green home and business space on it in the same building.? Throughout two decades we repaired and painted as every home owner does, until last summer when my hubby announced it was painting time. Well, that project morphed into Green Home Renovation Lessons?Learned.

This summer we will be helping another couple with their green home? renovations on their small summer cabin.? They are also into simple green living. And,? I?m using the royal ?we? as my hubby is a qualified carpenter and tradesman, who has building skills that I don?t have. I?m merely a consultant and assistant but we work very well together and we come as a package deal.

cottageOur friends won?t expand the square footage of the cabin beyond adding a covered deck but they will make better use of the space they have.? There are non-bearing walls that will be removed to create an open house plan. There will be major changes when it comes to flooring, solar panels, heating and lighting.

As winter rain drips down my friends are sending us green renovation ideas and concepts from many sources. We are discussing them by email and? telephone and longing to store our umbrellas so we can get to work. This summer is when the project will begin but I?m looking forward to spring. That?s when we will be traveling to view some other green cabin renovations and incorporating what we can into the green cabin reno project.

Finance minister: Zimbabwe has $217 left in the bank | FP Passport

Though economic conditions have improved in Zimbabwe since the days of 231 million percent inflation, this week brought some pretty disturbing news:?

After paying public workers' salaries last week, the balance in cash-strapped Zimbabwe's government public account stood at just $217, Finance Minister Tendai Biti said Tuesday.

"Last week when we paid civil servants there was $217 (left) in government coffers," Biti told journalists in the capital Harare, claiming some of them had healthier bank balances than the state.

"The government finances are in paralysis state at the present moment. We are failing to meet our targets."

It's hard to think of a public servant than a less enviable job than Biti's, but despite this week's news, he deserves some credit for a pretty remarkable turnaround. The inflation that made the country world famous is now under control, thanks to his decision to abolish the country's currency. And there's been GDP growth every year since he came into office following a decade of contraction.?

Nonetheless, the state's cash flow problem is made more dire by the international sanctions on Robert Mugabe's government -- Biti is allied with the opposition Movement for Democratic Change -- which may make it harder to borrow the funds need to keep the state operating. The constitutional referendum and elections scheduled for this year, which are estimated to cost at least $104 million, will also not help.?

Iran says it sent monkey into space successfully

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran said Monday it has successfully sent a monkey into space, describing the launch as another step toward Tehran's goal of a manned space flight.

According to a brief report on state TV, the rocket dubbed Pishgam, or Pioneer in Farsi, reached a height of 120 kilometers (72 miles). The report gave no other details on the timing or location of the launch, but said the monkey returned to earth safely.

Iran has long said it seeks to send an astronaut into space as part of its ambitious aerospace program, including plans for a new space center announced last year. In 2010, Iran said it launched an Explorer rocket into space carrying a mouse, turtle and worms.

The U.S. and its allies worry that technology from the space program could also be used to develop long-range missiles that could potentially be armed with nuclear warheads. Iran denied it seeks atomic weapons and claims it is pursuing nuclear reactors only for energy and medical applications.

Iran has announced several successful launches of satellites, dating back to 2005 in a joint project with Russia.

Tehran has not given details of its planned new space facility, but it already has a major satellite launch complex near Semnan, about 200 kilometers (125 miles) east of Tehran. A satellite monitoring facility is located outside Mahdasht, about 70 kilometers (40 miles) west of the Iranian capital.

Iran says it wants to put its own satellites into orbit to monitor natural disasters in the earthquake-prone nation, improve telecommunications and expand military surveillance in the region.

Acer hints at very low-cost, quad-core 8- and 10-inch tablets

Acer Iconia B1-A71

Acer pushed the boundaries of price for major brand tablets with its $150 Iconia B1. It's not about to quit with just one model under its belt, however. The company's Greater China head, Linxian Lang, explained to China Times that there should also be 8- and 10-inch tablets on the way with "aggressive" prices. Acer isn't just adding more glass, either, as it's looking at quad-core MediaTek processors for a speed jump. There's no word on just when the larger budget slates might appear, although we wouldn't count on them coming to the US when the B1 has already been ruled out.

Selling Online in 2013 - The Number 1 Sales Strategy (Infographic)

online-sales-strategy-infographicMost everybody in the industry agrees that people purchase (anything) based on a human emotion. Then, we justify it with logic.

We also know that there is an explicit difference between what we need versus what we want. We need air, food, shelter. But, we don?t need a new BMW or the latest fashion.

But, we WANT that!

And, this is BIG business. Sales and advertising companies and their executives know you better than you know yourself, it seems. They are playing with your emotions at every turn.

Most of the time, and if they are any good, they place emotional copy, triggers and ads in front their target audience to make you buy now, and think later. (?making a lot of money in the process, if done right).

However, when it comes to selling online ? using the Internet, there is a specific sales and marketing strategy that works ? every time. It?s based on emotion too, but used differently, and over time.

Review this 1 minute selling and sales strategy info-graphic. See if you agree.

Do you agree that this can work for 100% of businesses that have an online presence? The EBM framework for successful sales is where you should place your focus in 2013 and beyond.

Divorce- Tips on Dividing Your Stuff | Donna Ferber, LPC, LADC, LLC.

Divorce is not a single event, but a series of losses, changes and transitions. There are many watershed moments in the process of dissolving a marriage. One that seems overlooked for its emotional impact is the division of the martial property.

It is easy to say ?It?s just stuff, it can be replaced?, but the accumulation of furniture, objects and even chintzy doodads of no ?real value? are keepers of the couple?s stories. As the years go on, we amass possessions that hold memories and are the tangible evidence of the milestones and celebrations of the relationship. Our stuff holds our history.

There is that collection of shot glasses representing the states you visited on that cross country trip as newlyweds. There is the writing desk his grandfather made, given to both of you as you celebrated a marital milestone. There is that crazy abstract painting you bought years ago which cost you more than you could afford, but simply could not live without. There is that first piece of ?good? furniture you splurged on. There are collections of books, music and of course photographs. All of these things you accumulated together.

Now as you consider how to divide the ?stuff?, it helps to think of your possessions in categories. Some will be split with an eye on the practical, some will require appraisals for their value and others will simply pull at your heart strings. Discussing these items by categories can facilitate you and your partner having conversations about the division that will not lead to huge explosions. Just knowing that some items will elicit more emotion than others can help you prepare yourself for the division.

  • Items you each owned before the marriage- These stay with their original owner.
  • Practical stuff including furniture, tools, kitchen items, bedding- Extras/duplicates can go with the person who is leaving the home. The majority of stuff should stay at the family home.
  • Valuable stuff- Antiques, collections, art work, vintage cars, boats, etc. These should be appraised professionally and split.
  • Sentimental stuff- These are items that are precious to the family. Despite the fact that they may have no real monetary value, they often spark the biggest controversy. Make duplicates when possible (photos, music, etc). With those items that can?t be duplicated (i.e. your children?s art work or a collection of seashells) take turns choosing.
  • Items that express personal interests- Books, CD?s, hobby materials, etc. Each party should be able to take those things. Shared hobby? Then a shared split.
  • Children?s stuff- Their furniture and everything they use in their daily lives should remain in the family residence. A child?s bedroom represents their emotional haven especially when their parents are breaking up. Make sure to leave their space intact. Later the child should be free to move toys, clothes, games, etc., back and forth with ease. Right now-minimize changes to their environment as much as possible.
  • Items of Legacy- Those things you want your children to inherit. These should be discussed, listed and then decided who will hold them for the future generations.
  • Gifts-They are yours to keep. The only exception may be family heirlooms, which you may choose to return to the family.
  • Wedding Photos- Usually no one wants those! Many people impulsively destroy them only to regret it later. The truth is these belong to your children. They go under ?Items of Legacy?.

And course, you know this, but it is a good reminder- you won?t get everything you want; but neither will your partner.

Finally, the parent who is moving out should be mindful not to leave the home looking ransacked. ?You don?t want your child to look around his primary home and see it as cleaned out, only to see those items show up in the new residence. It makes you look like a marauder. ?I have heard stories of men taking the lawn mower and snow blower only to move into a condo. That is simply spiteful and your kids will notice; especially when they are outside on a frigid day shoveling snow.

Remember, your kids will be watching. How you behave, interact and what items you take is not just about your ?comfort?. It speaks to your kids of your character and how you much you care for them. You may feel entitled to ?what?s yours?, but when you strip the family home, you also disrupt and upset the children?s home. Keep in mind what is really of the most value; it is far more difficult to regain children?s respect than to replace even the most precious of items.

Pinterest Introduces 'News' Feature to Improve Content Discovery

In place of Pinterest's activity feed, the company has installed a new tool called "News." The feed displays boards where your recent pins have been repinned, creating a feed of potentially relevant content that users can peruse from their own profiles or those of others.

According to a blog post introducing News, Pinterest explains the tool is meant to foster content discovery. "To make relevant and interesting content easier to find, we are introducing News," Pinterest writes. "We think this will help pinners like you find more relevant boards and pins more easily."

[More from Mashable: 10 Awesome Pranks to Play On Your Facebook Friends]

Pinterest began rolling out News to a gradual population of users on Jan. 16. It is unclear precisely when News will reach the entire network, although the company's blog anticipates "over the next few weeks." Pinterest could not be reached for comment.

[More from Mashable: The 25 Most Buzzed-About Universities of 2013]

Users can access News from two places: See a preview of News in the left-hand column of the Pinterest homepage, or head to any user profile and click "News," an option next to follower count.

Although users can access a "News" tab on Pinterest's mobile app, the feed only displays repins (akin to the old activity feed) and does not steer users to related boards like its web counterpart. Nor does a user's mobile profile contain a News option.

Should a user still wish to track information found in the old activity feed (i.e. likes and new followers), he or she can configure notifications settings to receive the news via email.

Twin sisters have lived with both husbands for 24 years

Identical twin sisters who have shared a home with their husbands and children for a staggering 24 year are downsizing ? so they can spend their retirement together.

Inseparable Jo Hatfield and Diane Howell, both 58, live together with their husbands ? both retired policemen ? and four children in perfect harmony under one roof.

Born just ten minutes apart, they describe each other as their ?other half? and even share a job running a bridal wear shop together.

Diane, left, with her husband Chas Howell and right, her sister Jo and her husband Graham Hatfield

Diane, left, with her husband Chas Howell and right, her twin sister Jo and her husband Graham Hatfield

The pair say they are lucky to have such ?laid back? husbands in Chas, 58, who is married to Diane, and Jo?s husband, Graham, 60.

But now their children have flown the nest the twins are downsizing their family home for a smaller one ? so they can continue living together in retirement.

The sisters said the only thing they regret is not moving in together sooner and vowed to stay together ?til death do us part?.

Mother-of-two Jo said: ?We are considering a move ? but it will be both families moving together.

?We would like a smaller garden as we are getting older and do not have as much time to manage it.

The family get together on the sofa, with all four of them living in harmony under the same roof

The family get together on the sofa, with all four of them living in harmony under the same roof

?We have considered building a new house in the garden of our current home so we have the convenience of not moving, but have a smaller garden.?

The grandmother-of-three added: ?Everyone finds it hard to believe we all live together.

?But there are no secrets, no issues and anything we have to say, we say to each other as a group.

?We also have the same household account which both couples put the same amount into each month.

?The house isn?t split at all ? we share one kitchen, one dining room and one lounge. The only thing we don?t share are husbands.

?It is lovely as we still have 12 to 16 people round the dinner table for Sunday lunch. We think it is really important to keep the whole family together.?

Jo (left)) and Diane when they were four years old

Jo (left)) and Diane when they were four years old

Grandmother-of-two Diane said: ?Our solicitors advised us against us moving in together ? they thought it wouldn?t work, but we made it work.

?We had a massive garden for the kids to run around in and if the men were on shift work, Jo and I had each other and the kids for company.

?Our friends have become their friends and visa versa and overcrowding has never been an issue.

?Jo and I are from a big family and have never felt we needed our own space.

?We don?t have arguments ? we?d rather call them ?discussions? which we compromise on and they hardly crop-up.

?Perhaps it?s because there?s always someone else around that both couples feel they have to be better behaved.

?There?s probably a lot of married couples who row more than we do.

?Jo and I have always been really close and living together like this is so much fun.

?People think it means twice the work because it?s twice the number of people, but it?s half the work if anything, everyone chips in.

?If we have any regrets at all, it?s that we didn?t all move in together earlier.

?And if we decide to move in the future, we?ll all move together, that?s a dead cert.

    ?Til death do us part.?

The mother-of-two added: ?Our lives went in tandem from the very beginning. We both had our tonsils out at four, and we had hernia operations within a couple of weeks of each other at the age of 47.

?We?ve never felt the need to differentiate ourselves ? if one of us got a new haircut and it looked good, the other would go out and get one exactly the same.?

Jo and Diane decided to move their families in to one big house ? a ?four-bedroom, semi-detached former doctor?s surgery ? in Maidstone, Kent, in 1989.

Before the couples? children flew the crowded house, Diane?s girls, Tracy, 33 and Vicky, 31 and Jo?s daughter Nicola, 34, shared a bedroom in the loft.

Jo?s son Christopher, 32, slept in one of three upstairs bedrooms with the parents occupying the other two.

Despite the children moving out and living with their own families, the mothers still share childminding duties.

And Jo, Diane and three of their daughters run a bridal shop called Jodi in Maidstone, Kent, with Diane?s husband Chas doing the menswear.

Jo met Graham at an old-fashioned dinner dance she had gone to with Diane when they were 16 and they married in 1973.

A year later Diane met her future husband Chas at a bus stop and plucked up the courage to ask him out.

The sisters were bridesmaids at each other?s weddings and initially lived just a few streets apart in Maidstone, Kent.

But they decided to move in together at the suggestion of their family because they spent so much time chatting on the phone.

Graham, who was a policeman, encouraged Chas to join the local force with him, and Diane and Jo started a job share at an estate agent?s.

The two couples spend Christmas and holidays together and even go out to dinner as a foursome on Valentine?s Day.

The only night of the year reserved for each couple is their wedding anniversary.

Coyotes smash door of Chicago suburb home

    By Emily Florez, NBCChicago.com

A pack of coyotes chasing after a puppy broke several panes of glass in the door of a home in a suburb of Chicago Friday as they tried to chase the dog into the house.

"I've never seen anything quite like this," Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said of the attack on South Herbert Road, Riverside, about a mile from the Des Plaines River.

Dog owner Roger Nelson said it was about 4 a.m. when he let his three dogs -- a beagle, a golden retriever and a German shepherd puppy -- out into the yard.

He said his pups barely made it out of the door when the pack of coyotes came charging.

The coyotes -- Nelson said there were four of them -- came from the bushes and easily cleared a fence.

"That's about a three-and-a-half foot fence. I mean, they jumped it, no issues at all," he said.

Nelson said he hurried the dogs back inside. They made it, but the coyotes didn't let up.

"[They were] just standing up on their back as they were clawing at the door, and then the two older [dogs] I got, they were snarling back at them and growling," he said.

The coyotes were finally scared away when Nelson fired a high-powered BB gun at them, striking two of them, police said. Nelson's dogs were unharmed.

    Read more from NBCChicago.com

The attack left a lot of damage to the door. Several panes of glass of an outer door were broken, as was the glass on the main entry door.

Police Sgt. Bill Gutschick said in a statement that in his 25 years on duty, this was the first time he?s heard of coyotes trying to get into a home while chasing a pet.

Riverside has had other recent reports of coyotes attacking pets, Weitzel said, and on Jan. 3, a 7-month-old Bichon-Poo puppy was killed in the 100 block of Addison Road.

Weitzel urged residents to be aware of wild animals in the area.

"Coyotes do not know the difference between pets and the wild creatures they hunt, so try to protect pets by accompanying them outdoors," he said.

And use a short leash, he said.

Don?t ignore the snore: Snoring may be early sign of future health risks

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Here's a wake-up call for snorers: Snoring may put you at a greater risk than those who are overweight, smoke or have high cholesterol to have thickening or abnormalities in the carotid artery, according to researchers at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

The increased thickening in the lining of the two large blood vessels that supply the brain with oxygenated blood is a precursor to atherosclerosis, a hardening of the arteries responsible for many vascular diseases.

"Snoring is more than a bedtime annoyance and it shouldn't be ignored. Patients need to seek treatment in the same way they would if they had sleep apnea, high blood pressure or other risk factors for cardiovascular disease," says lead study author Robert Deeb, M.D., with the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Henry Ford.

"Our study adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting that isolated snoring may not be as benign as first suspected. So instead of kicking your snoring bed partner out of the room or spending sleepless nights elbowing him or her, seek out medical treatment for the snorer."

The study reveals changes in the carotid artery with snorers -- even for those without sleep apnea -- likely due to the trauma and subsequent inflammation caused by the vibrations of snoring.

Study results will be presented January 25 at the 2013 Combined Sections Meeting of the Triological Society in Scottsdale, Ariz. It has been submitted to The Laryngoscope journal for publication.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) -- a sleep disorder that occurs due to the collapse of the airway in the throat during sleep and causes loud snoring and periodic pauses in breathing -- has long been linked to cardiovascular disease, along with a host of other serious health issues.

But the risk for cardiovascular disease may actually begin with snoring, long before it becomes OSA. Until now, there was little evidence in humans to show a similar connection between snoring and cardiovascular risk.

For the Henry Ford study, Dr. Deeb and senior study author Kathleen Yaremchuk, M.D., reviewed data for 913 patients who had been evaluated by the institution's sleep center.

Patients, ages 18-50, who had participated in a diagnostic sleep study between December 2006 and January 2012 were included in the study. None of the participants had sleep apnea.

In all, 54 patients completed the snore outcomes survey regarding their snoring habits, as well as underwent a carotid artery duplex ultrasound to measure the intima-media thickness of the carotid arteries.

Carotid intima-media thickness, a measurement of the thickness of the innermost two layers of the arterial wall, may be used to detect the presence and to track the progression of atherosclerotic disease. Intima-media thickness is the first sign of carotid artery disease.

Compared to non-snorers, snorers were found to have a significantly greater intima-media thickness of the carotid arteries, the study finds.

The study also revealed no statistically significant differences in intima-media thickness for patients with or without some of the traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease -- smoking, diabetes, hypertension or hypercholesterolemia.

"Snoring is generally regarded as a cosmetic issue by health insurance, requiring significant out-of-pocket expenses by patients. We're hoping to change that thinking so patients can get the early treatment they need, before more serious health issues arise."

The Henry Ford research team plans to conduct another long-term study on this topic, particularly to determine if there's an increased incidence of cardiovascular events in patients who snore.

Along with Drs. Deeb and Yaremchuk, Henry Ford study co-authors are Paul Judge, M.D.; Ed Peterson, Ph.D.; and Judith C. Lin, M.D.
