It?s another slow news day in movie-land and although this probably seems like kind of a non-story, I am guessing that it will make more than a few James Bond fans out there very happy. With the release of Skyfall just a couple of months away, word is coming out that this will definitely not be Daniel Craig?s final appearance in the role of 007. Big surprise, right? Sony Pictures has a new co-financing deal with MGM and they appear to be pretty eager to lock down Craig for future entries. His contract has at least two more Bond films on it, but what?s more interesting is that Sony and MGM are reportedly looking to start pumping them out on a much more regular basis. If all goes according to plan, we may be back to getting new Bond flicks every other year.
According to the James Bond fan site MI6, barring any unforeseen circumstances, Craig will also appear in the 24th and 25th Bond films following Skyfall. What happens after that is still yet to be decided. Last year it was being reported that he had been offered a deal to star in five movies after Skyfall, but it sounds like that may have been misreported. His current deal encompasses five EON films in total.
Either way, producer Michael G. Wilson has publicly stated that he would like to see Daniel Craig break Roger Moore?s record of seven consecutive 007 films, and considering that most of Craig?s other acting gigs haven?t exactly been lighting up the box office, he?s probably not likely to turn his back on Bond anytime soon. EON is already busy trying to sign screenwriters for the next two movies, and they are talking about returning to a two-year cycle in between Bond films. That would put Bond 24 on track for a late 2014 release date.
But could a strict two-year cycle cause a decline in the quality of the films? Between 1977 and 1989 they stuck to that schedule right up until Licence to Kill, which was not necessarily the franchise?s strongest run. Of course, in the early days, they only needed one year between Bond flicks, but obviously the special effects demands are a lot more extensive now. What do you think?
